Artwork Details

DescriptionEventually, I got this page, and I was able to look at the art more closely than anybody else since Mr. Kieth drew it (in the end, this is what original art collecting is all about - unless it isn't, of course, for instance when memories are involved... mmmh huge topic, let’s get back to the page). I was able to find a surprising amount of details, not even related to the main characters... I mean, look at those small guys pointing around (I highlighted some of them in the details). They are small photocopies, entangled in an impossibly complicated frame. They would have been probably EASIER to draw than to copy - but then they would have been different from each other, while they were intended to be exactly the same, just like street signs... what a craft, what dedication to the work. If you cannot apply the word "art" here - well, then we are really on different pages of the book. This story on MCP came after the brief stint of Mr. Kieth on Sandman, a series that he left delivering the immortal line “I felt like Jimi Hendrix playing with the Beatles" (you can tell if your friend is a lady’s man not looking at the girl he married, but looking at the girls he left). Kieth work on MCP in the late 80's / early 90's has really been something precious - a handful of graphic masterpieces that strongly impressed many readers, and many future professionals. Maybe Kieth work was not praised and famous as, say, McFarlane or Lee: but I believe that his seminal and scarce works will have him to be regarded as the Michael Golden of his generation - definitely an artiste’s artist, and an inspiration for many followers. As far as the graphic rendition of the characters is involved, I will just mention the obvious fact that Wolverine is basically impaled on a tree - and still, he is plainly talking with the bad guy. I mean: what else do you need to know about this character attitude? Doesn't this picture explains everything about him already on his own? Even Nightmare is very interesting. He is depicted here in what seems (at least to me) and obvious Death Dealer homage. Even if MCP was the Marvel household title, DC echoes are very loud here: I wonder If Kieth was thinking about drawing the evil Dream of the Endless - or maybe the Vertigo version of the Joker. You see... I am obviously so very, very happy about getting this page. Call me stupid. July 2012: I noticed that the bearded pointing old guy appeared on a sketch published on Mr. Kieth blog (fantastic read for any original art lover, btw). I added a picture down here. Now I really wonder about the meaning of the thing! Any Kieth expert around? April 2013: The bearded guy resurfaces again. Now it has a name (Cap'ian Should), but still no story. My curiosity still grows. Social/Sharing |

It's a really cool page, but I'm more impressed by your enthusiasm for the piece! It's definitely what it's all about - the appreciation of the art. Enjoy it!

I haven't seen these issue in 15 years but I still remember it as being my favorite Sam Kieth work. Seeing this page confirms that. Brilliant stuff.

Great description Lorenzo. Sam had a atomic impact on me and my friends with his MCP work. He brought a underground quality into mainstream marvel comics and in my opinion, it was huge.
