Description

Stanley L. Wood is one of my favorites. His work inspired a generation of imaginations for those who encountered his work. This piece is from one of the Don Q Stories which were published between the late 1800's and early 1900's. Wood was a master of action and setting, as this Gouache piece testifies.

Shelton,

Hids use of light and dark, throughout his career, is always wonderful. In person, the tones are much more vivid. He was also an excellent storyteller.

Really nice British book illustration painting from over a hundred years ago.  They had pretty high standards as it was a high form of entertainment.  I like where the drawing and the paints just end on the edges to allow for the book's paper stock to determine the rest of the look outside.

Marcus,

Yiu are spot on. No monitors or screens to rely on. You could open any type of publication, and see marvelous work like this. Truly a Golden Age.

Great to see this.  Your description of the timing and mention of Gouache makes me wonder how far back have artists been using this medium.  I always thought earlier pieces were usually oil or watercolor or something else all together.  Definately interesting.

Duke,

Good question. I had originally thought this was oil, but the collector who owned it prior said it is Goauche. The tones are much more striking in person.
