Description

Reginald Thomas Cleaver, The Showers. This bears the look of his work done just after the turn on the century. The reverse has, in pencil, two dates, 1892 and 1902. It also states the artist as Ralph Cleaver, the brother of Reginald. There is no question that this is by the hand of Reginald, as it, very strongly, is in his style. Having his signature on the piece certainly puts an end to the question. There is something about his ink lines that fascinates me. This piece is full of wonderful characters. Just something new to discover in each corner. An artist who deserves more attention.

Fascinating look at history of the pubic bath house at a time when residences did not have private showers. Interesting that it also served as a place to do laundry as shown by the clothes hanging above.

Certainly a different era. These gentleman were taking advantage of one stop, Probably for them, inexpensive cleanliness.

Shelton,

Once he found his voice as an illustrator, he rarely ghave the audience anything but a masterwork. His compositions are always beautifully realised, and hid lines are wonderfully put to paper. This piece captures so many characters, but does not seem crowded in the least. For the complexity of the piece, it as amazing to see no corrections. That is the case with most of his work. Amazing.
