DescriptionOriginal art for one of Jeff Jones' best known pieces, "In a Sheltered Corner." Jones made a copy of these pencils, inked the copy, and then sold both black and white and hand-colored prints of the art (despite what some believe, other than the painted prints no painted version exists). This piece is HUGE, and is in a frame made by Jones himself. The framed piece measures approximately 46" x 36" (see additional photos for a sense of the scale). Fellow CAF member Rob Pistella owns the light-boxed inks.I honestly am still amazed that I own this unbelievable piece of art -- it is certainly one of the finest (if not THE finest) pieces Jones ever created. It was drawn in 1978, during the famous period of "The Studio," when Jones shared space with Bernie Wrightson, Mike Kaluta, and Barry Windsor-Smith. It was one of the first pieces created after Jones decided to move out of commercial art and into fine art. These pencils are featured on a full page spread (p.35) of the well known "Studio" book published in 1979, and were issued as part of a six-piece portfolio in 1982. Obviously, the photos do not do this piece justice. In person, this art is gorgeous -- the fine line detail is incredible. But, the piece is also haunting. I believe the girl was Jones' girlfriend at the time. In person, her eyes bore into you, and it is difficult to look away. The symbolism of the piece, of a girl locked in a corner, is also impossible to ignore knowing Jones' history. I am just the second owner of this art. I purchased it from the friend of a friend, who bought it directly from Jones in 1982, after visiting Jones in Woodstock. The seller originally saw it unframed, but Jones built the frame himself before selling it. The seller was (and is) a huge Jones fan and has held the piece for over 30 years. He has decided to start letting some art go -- I can't thank him (and my friend) enough for making this happen. Social/Sharing |

Ben, that is an outstanding addition to an already incredible collection. Certainly a masterwork from what many consider Jones in his prime. I hope to see it in person some day!

I used to take long looks at the finished version as it was published in the Studio book. The beauty of it caught the eye, but the mysteries of it fascinated me. These pencils are no less exquisite and the mysteries remain forever unanswered.

This is fantastic -- you're right, her eyes do bore into you. And the mystery and symbolism behind the piece will make it something you find new things in every time you see it. Bravo!

But you left out the most important part: WHAT IS THE CAT'S NAME?

He obsesses and obsesses on art and spends all his money pursuing the next great piece. But we love still love him, and figure (as my wife says) "hey, you only live once and have to pursue what makes you happy."

Now this is very, very nice. Pencils are their own kind of magic.

Spectacular and iconic piece from Jones --- what a treasure! You are exceptionally kind to indulge your cat's art habit in this way. And thanks for posting!

Marbles. What a great name for a cat and an appropriate name for a collectors cat. We lost our Marbles years ago. At least you still have yours.

A forgotten favorite from a long time ago, quite nice to stumble onto it here, this one drawing inspired me so much I made a whole comic with a similar character and a dragon thirty years ago.
