DescriptionAlthough Colan/Everett's Black Widow art remains the burning obsession of my collecting hobby, I have to admit that Cap #136 probably represents the creative mountaintop for this artist pairing. For whatever reason, this is the issue where Bill Everett just poured it on, and the achievement is pretty stunning.Looking over the Bullpen Bulletins and Marvel Checklists from these issues (some are included in additional images below), and reviewing the chronology of this period of Marvel comics, it strikes me that what I and others think of as aesthetically transcendent artist pairings to shine throughout the centuries with effulgent glory, were in fact mundane scheduling decisions and matter-of-course work assignments from editor Stan Lee. Why was Gil Kane drawing Spider-man that month? Stan had moved John Romita over to Fantastic Four or Captain America (etc.). Here's my theory: when the Amazing Adventures #5 boards arrived at the offices featuring Bill Everett's inks over Gene Colan on the Black Widow, someone said "Why are we wasting this quality art on a third stringer like the Black Widow? Let's put Everett over Colan on Captain America where it'll matter!" Hence, we have two amazing Colan/Everett Cap stories, instead of a few more Colan/Everett Black Widow stories which, had they existed, would have warped the very space time continuum and changed the course of Earth's history as we know it. In this alternate reality, I would either hold dominion over all creation as a benevolent universal overlord, or be a gibbering drooling idiot, living under a bridge and throwing rocks at cars. I love Colan/Everett art. I would very much like to purchase your examples at prices that Bernie Madoff would find morally objectionable. If you heed my plea, then your peace will be like a river, and your righteousness like the waves of the sea! Social/Sharing |

Too bad this incredible art team only lasted one more issue -- the splendiferous CAP 137, guest-starring Spider-Man! Everett then got moved over to Kirby's THOR for a few more crazy awesome ink jobs... OH, yeah -- and this page is GREAT! Dig the Falcon flying around with those crazy-cool Everett speed trails!
