DescriptionI picked this up several years ago at the Profiles auction. It cost me three Gil Kane covers and some sleep for a few weeks, and they were darn nice Gil Kane covers. Probably, with all the craziness lately in the OA market and the numbers we see for certain things, losing those three covers may not have been the best deal financially in hindsight. But it's a great Frazetta and one I remembered from my ERB days. My copy is the 1972 Science Fiction book club edition of "A Fighting Man of Mars," and the caption under the plate is "Behind us came the hunting men of U-Gor." I would have sold off more to acquire it. It's pencil, pen and ink.Social/Sharing |

This is beautiful John! The pencils are killer and everyone knows Frazetta>Kane!

Stunningly beautiful! I personally prefer Frazetta's pencil and ink illustrations over the painted work, although I may be in a minority with that. I'm sure that your Kane covers were indeed great, but I wouldn't lose any sleep, just looking at this one. As far as market prices on particular areas of collecting go...future shifts in the market could see this as the better investment long term. Frazettas are on a different plane of collecting.

Oh yeah, I don't regret it at all, John. What I am most amazed at these days is that many of the big-money pieces we see sell, has little to do with the quality of the art. Which, of course, is subjective.

I love the way it's abstractly fantastic yet so incredible figuratively

This is a really great one John! One of my very favorite of his ink illustrations. You were very smart to pick this up!

Three Kane covers don't have as much class and ass as a Frazetta!

I cannot imagine 3 Gil Kane covers I would rather have than this. Good call!

No regrets John, you made the right call. This is a master class on ink wash and composition. Exquisite.

Spectacular! Nothing against Kane, but I think you got the better end of the deal. I love how Frazetta graded the values to push some elements forward and control the viewer's eye. The design of each element and all the textures are so good. Love to see a bigger scan... Congrats!

Insanely beautiful and achingly rendered. A perfect top end Frazetta!

I've returned to that Profiles catalog many times and thought this was one of the better pieces offered in that auction. It is fantastic to know that it is in your collection. What a beauty! Thank you for sharing it!

I think you bought well.... this one went far under what some had projected. (Lots of deals were had that day)

Although a lot to be given up but the payoff of a Frazetta is amazing! Wish I could see it in person.

An incredible piece from the legend! One of our favourites. I wouldn't regret the sacrifice you made in the slightest.

This was the piece I went into the auction to 'purchase'. In the end, I had already bought 3 pieces, so I ran you up as far as I could. Otherwise, it might have cost you a couple more Kane covers.😉
Congrats, John

Might be my favorite inked Frazetta. Was talking about this piece to a collector just last week. It's gorgeous!

Fantastic! Even without knowing what you traded, for a Frazetta aways seems justifiable [IMO] and this one is a beauty.

A high price to pay but (easy for me to say) worth it--this is a classic Frazetta example that checks all the boxes of what you'd want in a Frazetta.
