John Van Fleet is a graduate of the Pratt Institute where he studied graphic design. Influenced by his close friends George Pratt and Mark Chiarello, who where doing comics at the time, John left the field of graphic design behind but kept his graphic style.

John may be best known by comics fans for his work on Clive Barker's Primal, Typhoid Mary, & Batman, where he has produced three graphic novels: The Chalice, The Ankh and Cast Shadows. He has also illustrated numerous trading cards for Upper-Deck and covers for the popular X-Files comics from Topps and Hero from DC Comics. His work can be seen on magazine and book covers as well as in the pages of National Geographic. He has worked for such clients as Lucas Films, Sony Pictures, E.A. Games and many more.

A fan of comics, cartoons and toy robots, John lives in North Carolina with his wife and two daughters, two dogs, six hermit crabs and a gecko.

Beautiful piece ! Is this a print of a fully CG work ? or was it partially hand painted over a print ?

Amazing piece , I was also wondering wich part of it is made whiteout computer.

Hello all---when last I spoke with John, he explained that this is a fully digital work, using page 29 of the graphic novel as a reference point. The only element(s) not new to the piece are the filament bulbs, which were photoshopped in from page 29. Everything else is entirely new composition which became the cover to the promotional poster, hardcover, and softcover.
