Description

Growing up I was an avid Science Fiction reader. And after awhile I began to recognize the artists of the cover art and sometimes I would buy a book just because I liked the cover art.
Jeff Jones was one of the artists who I recognized and followed.
I bought the famous The Studio book and was lucky to obtain a couple of watercolor sketches at a Science Fiction Convention in 1995, from someone who was repping him at time.

I always found it curious that she would go in with the watercolor after putting down only the most basic structure for the figure, but I can only assume she did these types of pieces because it was in fact the watercolororing that she enjoyed best about these simpler sketches. This is one of those types of pieces that are beautiful and delicate because of its simplicity, not in spite of it. Lovely piece!

Catherine Jones and me
Tell each other fairy tales

Sketchin' in the Sci-Fi
Coming through The Studio
When everybody loves nudes
She can never be lonely

Well, She's goin' paint my picture
Paint this girl in brown and flesh and black opaque
All of the beautiful haunches are very, very meaningful
Yeah, well, you know Jeff is my favorite painter
I felt so symbolic yesterday
If I knew Catherine Jones
I would buy myself a nudie art and pay

Lovely! I still buy vintage paperbacks for the cover art. Jones was a master of the form, and her sketches and personal pieces are so good
