Description

This fantastic sequence (strips 120-122) is probably my favorite from Yale's wonderful web comic, JL8. As a big Superman fan, many of the best Superman moments I've read in the last few years have come from JL8 - not to mention some of the best Wonder Woman moments too, because Yale writes her extremely well also.

This sequence takes place at Diana's birthday party, after her mother let all Diana's friends know she is a princess; a secret she did not want revealed. After Diana blows up at her mother and storms off, Clark takes it upon himself to do the right thing and make his friend feel better. Only it's more complicated than that, because Clark has unrequited feelings for Diana, who is trying to set up her best friend Karen (Power Girl) with Clark.

The whole birthday saga was great, and this moment has always resonated with me. Yale paces it so well, and his clean linework and expressive faces sell every moment. Underneath the inks you can see his layouts drawn in non-repro blue pencil.
