Description

Tonight I am posting two very different covers by Turkish-born comic book artist Mahmud Asrar, both from 2015.

As we know, Archie & the gang were drawn in the same style for years and years. Artists were trained to NOT deviate from the established way. But that changed a few years ago when the powers that be decided to change the paradigm and draw the characters a bit more realistically.

With this cover, you get both the classic and more modern styles on the same fun image.

I really like how hip & relaxed Betty looks, how Veronica is (surprise surprise) obsessed with her looks, how Jughead is now more engrossed in a tech device than he is in burgers and fries from Pop's, and how Archie is looking into the future.

Okay, I know I'll be in the minority on this, but I don't care. I think this piece works even better than the Avengers cover you posted by Mahmud, in both design and composition. It's funny, earlier today I was thinking about this "wholesale change" that occured with the Archie style a few years ago. For me, the jury is still out on whether I like the more realistic approach or not. But on this cover, with the approach being juxtaposed with the old school style, it works brilliantly!

Great composition/layout here with the downward perspective and each character facing a different direction. Also very cool that you have the classic looking head shots of each in the leaves as well as Asrar’s modern take! I’m not a fan of Archie comics per se but am a fan of good art, particularly from Asrar! Congrats, Paul!
