DescriptionThis is most likely my favourite modern Superman cover by probably the best storyteller alive. If not my fav Sup cover ever.Forget Superman flying heroically to the reader with Krypton exploding and his escape pod behind him or him against a super menace, or rescuing Lois even. THIS has everything you need in a Superman cover as far as I’m concerned. It is immediately understandable. Superman is late and Lois is scolding him for it. The staging and acting of the characters is nothing short of perfect. Lois steals the show (to this male collector, let’s be honest). Her face shows her annoyance perfectly. It is clearly not the first time this has happened, nor the second or tenth time. This is systemic. And yet, despite the obvious scolding, it is clear that she loves him dearly. Her stance is both straight and forward as she knows she is in her right to complain. She is a modern working woman, the old school camera indicating her profession of choice. She is sexy but not vulgar, fit but not built like Wonder Woman would be. Beautiful and strong. Superman is being spanked here so despite his impressive build (notice how he has to lean towards her to have a conversation face to face?), he is the one being defensive. He is trying to explain, slightly amused by her annoyance it seems, probably because he knows that despite his (usual) lateness, he took the time to pick a bunch of lovely flowers after averting a disaster or dismantling whatever menace of the day to (slightly) make up for it. Again strong figure work on Superman, a character Jose knows oh so well. My only caveat with the piece is that the hand holding the flowers looks slightly oddly positioned. And yet after looking at it several times, I think it may have been done on purpose, to highlight it immediately to the readers eye by isolating it a bit from Sup’s body (so to speak). The phone booth is symbolically placed between the two, like a symbol of times past when it stood between them (a situation that created even more frustration?). There is barely anything else behind it (i.e. blank space), to avoid distracting the eye of the central importance of the characters and the scene they are acting. Even Jose’s signature on a sheet of paper looks natural on the ground. This ties into the entire history (from day one) between these two (married) characters, it has warmth, humanity, humour, it is sexy and perfectly grounded a scene of two people who love themselves so much quarrelling. A testament to the über grand and seemingly natural genius that is JLGL. My wife does not care about comics or OA, tolerates it would be more accurate, and yet I have shown this piece to her twice when it popped on CAF and again years later when it re-appeared after having been taken down. She smiled twice and remembered it the second time. That’s how powerful and evocative this piece is to the lay(wo)man. I’m pretty sure that anyone who has vaguely heard of these characters and who has been in a relationship once in his/her life would smile at this piece. Because this is storytelling at its highest and purest level (and ye/t/s, it IS a cover). This is the final part (10) of my 2025 CAF birthday party, incidentally also my 20th year on CAF. Arrrrgh! You're killing me! All these years and I still don't have a Garcia-Lopez. This is a beauty! You sure know how to celebrate an anniversary. Congratulations again! Both on this piece and your 20th year on CAF (my 20th is coming in March).

Nice and romantic! It even has the old phone booth to show how far back this romance has been going.

A sweet romantic (despite Lois' annoyance at Clark) scene between these 2 make for just as nice of a cover as an action/battle one, if not more for the right person. JLGL does it again, lovely. Congrats and happy birthday part 10, I wanted you to keep going haha. Until the next post, cheers!

Worthy way to close out the birthday adds! Sublime pure illustration but you gotta love the playful nature of the image. Makes you smile. And that's part of what Supes does. Congrats!

Wonderful Superman cover by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez! I think you may be right. This may be what Superman is all about. After all, the most interesting thing about Superman is not that he is the most powerful being on Planet Earth. It's that he wants to be loved. He wants to be on time when he meets Lois, but he had this demanding job (BRIDGE COLLAPSING! SCHOOLCHILDREN IN DANGER) He wants to live a regular life and spend time with the people he cares about, but things have a way of interupting his plans (ALIENS ATTACK METROPOLIS). So he does his best but his best isn't alwayS good enough. And isn't that true about all of us? Great pick-up and Happy 20th Year on CAF!

I'll ALWAYS be a Superman - Lois shipper and this piece, in my opinion, is the perfect representation of why. What the heck would he want with WW, when he had Lois? I know, universe reboot, or whatever, but it still irks me.

Lovely lovely lovely. JLGL had a gift for making superpowers characters feel like they were living and breathing people.

An absolutely glorious (and gorgeous!) testament to the myriad of skills that JLG-L both commands and employs in his work. Beautiful figure work, perfect storytelling and character work, superb compositional command... WOW. A fantastic cover. Congrats on this pick up, Happy Birthday, Happy CAF Daily Featured Piece, and Happy 20th CAF Anniversary, all rolled up in one (and with plenty of magic and joy left over)! Spectacular piece, FM - congrats!
