DescriptionVICTORY AT SEA was a documentary television series about naval warfare during World War II and originally broadcast by NBC in 1952–1953. While the popular show was on the air, Russ Heath and Stan Lee (who first worked together in 1946!) teamed up to create these four try-out samples as a part of a proposal to sell a comic strip version of the "Victory at Sea" television show to newspapers. Russ and Stan realized that if it sold, the majority of the money would go to the producers/owners of the television show and not the two of them. So they never shopped the strips around and moved on to work on other projects together. But what remained behind were four absolutely incredible comic strips (with 3 panels in each) showcasing everything amazing about Russ Heath. They are some of the nicest, if not the nicest, war-themed art Russ has ever drawn. Each panel shows a different side of Russ's immense arsenal of drawing talent and design. As my buddy Duane said perfectly: "They are practically a mini-catalog of his bag of tricks and favorite subject matter." These strips are a war "tour de force" that Russ is very, very proud of. He told me it's some of his best work ever. I agree! And I am honored to now be the custodian of this art.Social/Sharing |

When I was in the Navy and on my ship, we had this documentary series and my Chief always requested it. This reminds me of an interesting time in my life.

It's wild how many iconic images are contained on these four dailies. You know how to bring the Heath!

Yes, these are awesome. Thanks for supplying the backstory. Imagine if the strip had been picked up, what a great thing that would have been!
