I believe the story here was David wanted to do a painted cover for Batman The Return. But running out of time, he ended up doing a pen and ink cover with Scott Williams, featured in Albert's gallery here:

Dave still ended up doing a painted piece based on this cover since he liked the image so much, which I purchased from him in SDCC 2011. He visited me in 2012, and upon seeing his painting, asked if he could have it back, as he found it unfinished and wanted to polish it up.

Fast forward to SDCC 2014, and he finally gave me back the finished piece. The two and a half year wait was more than worth it!

Dave is a master of his craft, and I wish he'd do more painted covers as he's hardly done any, but is a true virtuoso in painting when he puts his mind to it. I feel fortunate to own this painted piece, and thank David for asking this back so he could finish it.

I have included a picture I took of this piece when I first purchased it 3 years ago.
