Description

This is my first ever piece of original art. It's been hiding in my stash for a long time now, and I felt like it was time for it to be posted on here. Back in 2004, up and coming writer Geoff Johns had been asked to reboot the Green Lantern franchise and bring back fan-favorite Hal Jordan. His efforts kicked off with the "Green Lantern Rebirth" mini series, where he teamed up with Ethan Van Sciver to produce a truly memorable story that had a big impact on my young self. In 2005 I was in college (UCF - go Knights!) and was dirt poor, I got a free ticket to MegaCon in Orlando and spent most of my time walking around and looking at comics I couldn't afford. I had become a big fan of Ethan's from his work from Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, and really started to love his art on Rebirth, so when I saw he was doing free sketches at the con, I waited in line for 3 hours to get a Hal head sketch. When I got to the front, I saw he had a large stack of pages next to him. I started to flip through them and saw that they were the Rebirth pages. At that point in my life, I didn't even know that original art was something you could buy, so this kind of blew me away. Being in college and dirt poor, I couldn't really afford any of them, but Ethan was very friendly and gracious and told me that since it was late Sunday he would give me any page 50% off. I wish I could have afforded some of the double page spreads I saw, or some of the great Hal in costume pages, but I could only afford his lowest priced stuff. I didn't really know what page to buy until I flipped to this one. It was the first time Hal saw Carol since his return, it was a memorable scene and stayed with me after reading. I told Ethan I would buy it, but needed to go to an ATM first. I ran as fast as I could, and when I got back, Ethan was working out a deal to with a comic store to sell the entire stack. I ran up and reminded Ethan of our deal, and when he pulled the page out, the guy from the comic store said, "Oh, I really wanted that one!" I won't lie, that made the purchase even sweeter. I don't care that the page has an empty "stat" section, or that Hal isn't in uniform, this will always be a priceless piece for me. Anyways, after that, I fell in love with collecting original comic art and haven't stopped adding to my collection since then.

Exactly. That's why it was for me as soon as I saw it.

Nice moment from the arc and you've always gotta have a special place for that first piece. And of course a great illustration by EVS!
