This is a very interesting piece. I have a fairly large Risso collection and I had asked about prelims before and was told that is not how he works. To see a layout or prelim page is a rare treat.

It's interesting. I do believe he works without prelimary drawings and goes straight to the page, working everything out directly on the board. It's fun to study this penciled page and to see his decisions. From what I can tell he really worked hard on this mini-series. When you look at the collected edition, there are multiple unused versions of pages included in there.

The inked page I own is a great example of that as well. In the collection they included even another penciled version of that page that's different from mine and the one eventually used. It looks like, when going over the script for #1, that the penciled version in the book was his first pass (including the flag as noted in the script). The inked page I own seems to be the second version, playing around more with the layout, making it more 'Risso', but still sticking largely to the choreography of Vaughan's script. But still he wasn't satisfied and did a third and final version where the final panel is focused more on the horror in the guards eyes and less on Wolverine who is kept more mysterious.

He worked on Logan in between 100 Bullets issues and you can clearly see he enjoyed taking the time to really finesse the pages. I'm very happy to own these two pages. Especially the penciled page because you can really see how Eduardo's brain works. To be honest, I prefer this version over the final version. Where, with the other page I can understand why he preferred to go with the published version. A true master storyteller at work!
