DescriptionMy first Michael Turner piece, and it holds a special meaning for me and my family.First, owning Michael Turner art has been a goal of mine that I never thought I could attain. Finding anything of his today, let alone dealing with those owners/sellers, is understandably hard. Fans are passionate about Turner's work, and it's been difficult to find a middle ground when negotiating between nostalgia, rarity and fair pricing every time I've tried to purchase any piece I've been interested in. Second, Turner brought me back to the comic world with this DC run after I had a long hiatus away from the hobby. I had let go of it sometime in the 90's, and it was by chance in the mid 2000's when I was on a Southwest Airlines flight that Turner had an article in their Skymall magazine, talking about his DC designs. There I saw previews of what he and Peter Steigerwald created, and I was immediately hooked. I quickly rediscovered my love for comics and other artists after that, and my parents, who were fond of my collection since I was a young kid, thought it was great that I was returning to a hobby I had invested so much time and energy into. Third, after collecting prints for so many years since that day on Southwest, I had slowly moved into collecting original art when back in May of this year my father passed away at a pretty young age (53) on his way home from work. So, while we were(are) grieving, my mother wanted to give me a little money from his life insurance because she wanted us both to not feel guilty with what she received. She wanted for us to use some of it for more than just paying off bills, and before I accepted any money I asked her about buying comic art. She was okay with me using it on an original Turner piece because she and my father knew it was something that I had always dreamed of purchasing one day but could never afford. I then slowly started looking around CAF, making offers to owners of pieces I liked, when four months later I had another family health crisis emerge. This past July, both of my grandparents went into hospice. I had flown down to their home to take care of the both of them that month, when they got worse a week before my birthday in September. Now, my grandfather and I were very close, and he was an avid movie fan. He and I always agreed that the greatest comic book movie was the Christopher Reeves' Superman film, and when I started collecting Turner's DC prints 10 years ago he sent me a $100 check for my birthday and simply said, "Go buy a Superman poster." - My grandmother thought it was cute, lol. The print I chose was Michael Turner's Superman #205 cover, and I immediately got it framed and have had it hanging on my wall ever since. It was exactly ten years after that original gift was given when they both got really bad, and I had been staying with them a total of four months until they both passed away in October from natural causes. My mother was stuck at home working and having to take care of my father's paperwork during that time, and she believed and convinced my uncles to both agree that the small sum of money my grandfather had remaining should go to me for all the work I did. And while I was never expecting to be paid, I accepted the kind gesture and felt easier knowing that the money from my father could now be combined with my grandfather's and I wouldn't feel so irresponsible having to use it all to afford one piece of comic art. Then, while I was staying back at my grandfolkes home as it was being emptied out, by chance, I was looking around eBay after not having the time to check it out in weeks. This Turner/Superman piece had been on sale since before I left to take care of my grandfolkes in July, and now it was being listed for a lower price than what I was struggling to try and afford earlier. I decided then that it was fate to still see it for sale and that waiting for any other art to come later would be a mistake. So in conclusion, this piece represents a final gift from my father who encouraged my interest in comics as a hobby since I was a young child, a final gift from my grandfather who enjoyed the Superman character with me since I was a child, and it's a personal/historic Michael Turner piece who's run in the DC company brought back my inner passion for comics when I had left it for a time =) (sorry for the self therapeutic rant, but it makes me happy to be able to write this out now and have the ability to come back to read it later after time has passed) Additional edit notes to this description are posted below in the reply section because of the maximum word limit cutting off my typing =) Social/Sharing |

Great artwork and a wonderful story. Don't apologize for the length of it -I often find the stories connected to the pieces of art as wonderful as the artwork itself. I wish more people here on CAF would utilize the option. Congratulations on your first Turner. =)

Beautiful story and a truly awesome original from a sorely missed talent. I had the good fortune of visiting Mike on a few occasions at his office in LA and once even had the pleasure of flipping through a folder of art he had kept for himself. At the time this was among the pages inside and I remember clearly thinking it was more than understandable he had held back such a killer piece. Many congrats!!!

Thanks for sharing that story! Sometimes we get lucky and find the right piece at the right time, and I'm glad to hear that, despite family tragedy, there was a positive comic artwork outcome in the end. Congratulations!

Edit:: I finally got this piece framed with Museum Acrylic "glass" on one side and standard acrylic on the other. The framing concept was to have the original art on the front and then for reference sake to have the colored art print on the reverse side for future generations to be able to immediately turn over and see. And since when I purchased this art the previous owner provided me with a reprinted art print anyways, I didn't have to unframe my first run Michael Turner signed print and could use the Peter Steigerwald signed-only print instead =)
Edit 2 (12/18/18):: The original penciled piece was published in the hardbound book 'Superman/Batman: Michael Turner Gallery Edition, 2015' by GraphittiDesigns
