Description

This is the first page and first appearance of El Diablo -- A character created by Robert Kanigher and Gray Morrow. The third panel is a neat little gem. The three bandits were modelled after (top to bottom) Al Williamson, Angelo Torres and Dick Giordano. I managed to win the January 2005 eBay auction for this page from my old pal, Joel Thingvall, formerly of the CFA-APA and the comicart-L. I have very fond memories of this page (and the entire story) with all of its tips of the hat to some great super-stars. From the time this story first appeared I wondered if I might ever be so fortunate as to own the original artwork. Also featured in this story are Gil Kane as a country doctor, and Phil Seuling as the Sheriff!

Great page! I didn't manage to glom onto it when it was available (**sniff**), but I did manage to obtain the page with the great close-up of the "Gil Kane" country doc in the same story! This story and this period showcases some of Gray Morrow's most unbelievable art.

This is from one of those stories that I wish I could win a page from as it came out when I was learning there was more to comics than superheroes. I know DC was having a hard time during this period, but I think there was a lot of creative work done on books like Adventure and, of course, All-Star and Weird Western. Gray Morrow's art surpassed the writing and really made an impression on me with this story.
