Description

James Allen St. John - "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" - Edgar Rice Burroughs, interior book illustration, Published by A.C. McClurg & Company, 1920. Mixed media on board, 25-3/4 x 16-3/4 inches.

With the untimely passing of Gary Munson, this fantastic St. John illustration came back onto the market. The strange thing is that Gary had purchased this from my single owner auction at Heritage in 2019. I always loved this illustration and saw the opportunity to re-acquire it, and I succeeded! I have always felt that this was one of the best interior illustrations that St. John ever produced. It is a beautiful planetary romance night scene, with the twin moons of Mars, a damsel in distress among the ruins of an ancient civilization, etc... In other words, it has it all and it was done by one of the greatest artists to ever work in the fantasy and science fiction field. Delighted to have it back in the collection!

The world building in this is tremendous with the elements that are just different enough to delight and stimulate the imagination.  We still dream of these scenes a hundred years later.

The second sentence intrigues me. Are you old enough to remember 100 years ago?... you write like you were born in that period. Lol. A steady diet of classical literature may be the cause.

Its a keeper. Really surprised you let it go in the first place! Now you just have to buy back all the other artwork.....

Home again, home again.  Jiggity jig.  And at a near 50% price drop which is good for you but scary for this genre of art.

Indeed, and yet the two full color St. John paintings that Gary  bought from my auction as well, both sold for $150K each!  Considerably more than he paid!  I don’t think that you can bury St.John or Golden age art just yet!

Yes.  I guess it's all a sum numbers game.  Some will do well and others will lose but in the end, the total will be higher, usually.

Fantastic St. John illo, Glynn!  Congrats on getting it back.  Nothing better than letting it go and getting it back for less.

Such a beautiful, romantic, and memorable image from this era!  It clearly influenced the great illustrators who followed, including Frazetta, when they approached the subject.  Your collection continues to amaze and delight!
