Description

Classic abstract cover by Powers for the Murray Leinster book (Fawcet Gold Medal, 1958). According to the book, the Gizmos were "invisible aliens". So, how to visualize a war with an invisible enemy? Are these abstractions a glimpse into the Gizmos dimension? The war is evident by the arcing trails leading to white hot explosions. An excellent example of Powers' use of abstract/surreal strategies to solve an illustration challenge.

This art has proven popular and appears in print multiple times. Not only appearing as a two page spread in the The Art of Richard Powers, but also appearing as the cover of the Readercon 20 program book as well as cover for the recent book Bradbury Weather (2023).

We don't know exactly what they are, but they put on an elegant light show against the drab and darker parts of the atmosphere.
