DescriptionITEM HISTORICAL INTEREST: Heritage Auctioneers discovered a rare piece of Wonder Woman memorabalia from the estate of H. G. Roth (real name of H.G. Peter). This was the supposed first sketch of the Amazon Princess. Done in pencil, ink and crayon, the drawings show Wonder Woman from the front and the side. To the right of the figures, Peter wrote to Dr. William Moulton Marston, Wonder Woman's creator, "Dear Dr. Marston, I slapped these two out in a hurry. The eagle is tough to handle -- when in perspective or profile, he doesn't show up clearly -- the shoes look like a stenographer's. I think the idea might be incorporated as a sort of Roman contraption. Peter." In red, below the figures, Marston responded, "Dear Pete - I think the gal with hand up is very cute. I like her skirt, legs, hair. Bracelets okay + boots. These probably will work out. See other suggestions enclosed. No on these + stripes - red + white. With eagle's wings above or below breasts as per enclosed? Leave it to you. Don't we have to put a red stripe around her waist as belt? I though Gaines [note: M.C., publisher of All-American Comics] wanted it -- don't remember. Circlet will have to go higher -- more like crown -- see suggestions enclosed. See you Wednesday morning - WMM." Folded as correspondence between the two who worked on the early adventures of the amazon princess, this is rare insight into the creation of an iconic character, showing some of the creative process of two important comic book pioneers. This modest 13"x18.75" piece sold on auction for $33,350.00 in 2002. I only wish I could've afforded it myself. Don't know whose collection it is buried in, but the information should be shared and enjoyed!Social/Sharing |

How absolutely cool, Joel! What an incredibly, culturally valuable find. (Nice to be able to afford such history!) Of course, the biggest question in my mind is: Why would Harry want to change his name from "Roth" to "Peter"? (Seems like it should be the other way 'round.) He must've had some kind of bawdy sense of humor! :-)

The person who has the original copy of the first sketches of wonder woman, would be celebrity Nicholas Cage.
