DescriptionHaven’t posted any non-Marvel published work in a while, so here’s some non-typical fare for me in a Vampirella cover by Stephen Segovia. I’m good with branching out here and there :) I just loved it as soon as Stephen’s rep, Kirk Dilbeck, posted it on CAF. Stephen’s been on my list of artists, and recently I’ve been impressed with some of his lady centric covers (see other Vampi covers as well as James S and Wayne Mousseau’s Hellions covers on CAF), so I kinda narrowed down to “if I see that right lady image, I’m jumping”. So I jumped :)LOTS to like. Love the face on Vampi here, and her hair’s done beautifully, particularly how some of it’s draping over her right leg. The rain effect, on her hair and throughout the image overall, is rendered so well, adding atmosphere and contrast. And the textural elements…check that tree out. Lastly, the grey tones done mostly via ink wash really are a sight in person. I included a copy of the colored/published image, which is cool, but doesn’t hold a candle to the OA. I hesitated for a second on picking this up as I don’t read or know Vampirella comics but that was literally just a second as, in this case, it was ALL about the image. Definitely felt reaffirmed once in hand. 17th new artist added to the collection in 2021 with more comin! Social/Sharing |

Vampirella looks like she's identified her prey and is ready to pounce. Beautiful work by Segovia. I also want to point out that my phone autocorrected "Vampirella" to "Vampire LLC." Now I want to form a limited liability company with that name.

I Googled "Vampire LLC", and there are a few that are close, but not exact. You may be OK - go get it! :) I giggled cuz that autocorrect makes 100% sense, lol. Seriously though, thanks, Michael, and all, for the comments!

Elegant. Scrumptious. Sexy like Steve. Well, maybe not the last bit. Congrats on an absolute homerun of a commission... couldn't ask for more or better.

Don't sell yourself short, man ;) And actually this is a cover piece, but you've given me an inspiriation - I think I may have to go and check with Kirk about a Stephen commission, Steve N. Appreciate it, buddy :)

What an unexpected add, but very much apprecitaed. Really brings to mind the work of some of the Italian guys at the moment working with ink washes a lot. I love the pose and the composition, along with the excellent composition. Congrats!

Interesting, Kahlil, as I also never cared for this character and have therefore never read a single word of her. As a fan of Dracula since early childhood, I guess I probably just saw her as a way for the publisher to sell sex to comic fans. The irony of it all is that although she is simultaneously one of the characters I care least about, she has been illustrated by a host of phenomenal talents, primarily the Spaniards of the 1970s. Here once more, she is illustrated by someone who I've also always admired as a phenomenal talent as well. While I still prefer Segovia's earlier fine lined crosshatching, I'm still impressed by how much he has grown as an artist over time as he has experimented with different tools and techniques. This is a very beautifully illustrated piece, and I'm glad you finally found your Segovia example!

What he said!! :) Totally agree, Ruben, as far as your comments on both Vampi and Stephen. As far as the latter goes I've see that growth as well. When I think of Stephen's work I think of his pencil only pieces first, where I was introduced to his stuff, but now he's got THIS as part of the arsenal. We're all better for it as art fans. Thanks, man!

Very nice.
I love the drenched with rain feel as those tiny wings aren't doing much to protect her from it ;)
You know that that particular series is written by Priest so you should try it out ;)

Yeah, probably a fine line as far as the overall functionality of those wings :) But they look cool! And nope, didnt' know Priest was writing this book. I may have to check it out. I'm familiar with some of his past stuff ;) Thanks, F!

She would definitely fit better in my gallery, but I can't blame you: it's a really eye-catching image and a great Vampi cover! ;)

I'd lend her an umbrella, but then she'd bite my neck. It might be worth it...
Great cover, I love the range of tones he gets with the wash and the fading of the jungle in the distance.

Wow is this a gorgeous piece - this reminds me of Adams with the softness of the lines and blended shades. The lines really define Vampirella without removing her from the background and overall composition. Amazing cover.

Someone is about to have a bad, but sexy, day. She's clearly staring at a victim. And the light ink wash to heavy ink wash is a really nice way to create depth and denote foreground/background. You know, I was never a Vampirella person, either, but I like a lot of the imagery and artists that drew her, too. Bad girl art. Great score from another new artist, Kahlil. Congrats!

Might not be all that bad being the pouncee here, eh? :) A lil' bad girl here and there works, I think :) Thanks, J!

The way the rain is drenching Vampirella is equisite. Really brings out her sexiness and ferocity at the same time. Really nice piece.

This is stunning, K! Wow - the ink washes are next level, all the layers adding so much richness and dimension, and the simple "foggy" outline of trees in the distance (countered by the extreme detail of the washes up close) lend amazing depth to the piece. The rain effect is simply sublime (I guess she's "Dampirella" here?) and the clear, open sky in the top center of the piece lights (and highlights) the central figure so expertly. So good...
I'm also in the "never read" camp, but there is no denying the pedigree of amazing artists that have worked on her over the years, and this cover is terrific. Another superb add, K - congrats! Gorgeous!

I've been a huge fan of Stephen's work this year and this cover is another stunning example of why he's been so great! I also picked up the cover to Vengeance #15 and gaze at it often. Congrats on a gorgeoud addition to the collection!

Thanks, Frank! I agree that Stephen has leveled up and a large part of that are his recent string of Vampi covers, of which we are lucky enough to be 2 owners of. Just looked at yours - outstanding! Congrats to both of us :)

Beautiful Vampirella cover, man! Yeah, when I saw this, it made me think of my Segovia Vampi cover, and now you just left me a comment. Thanks! What strikes me most about yours is the the lovely interplay of the rain with Vampirella's skin and the background. Love the detail on those trees. Segovia has such a command of this character. Fantastic addition!

Vampirella for the win! Never been into this character but like most, the outfit would seize my attention when she was drawn. But this??? This piece is next let alone Big Boss Level! Segovia is one on my list of artists to collect and this piece reminded me why. Line work, posing, lighting, water effects...evrything that makes a piece a masterpiece and a beacon of a characters example is here and more. Congrats on this my friend! BTW, saved your gallery so I shouldnt miss your wicked updates again! Hope youre well!

Wow Khalil! Definitely was something I didn't expect to see in your gallery, but it looks great there none-the-less. This one is gorgeous and I really like the execution of the rain and background textures, Vampirella also doesn't hurt. I happen to really like the look of Segovia's artwork and this is a great representation of him at his best. Congrats man!

Hey Alan! Glad you dig it, man. You have some nice lady pieces yourself ;) Yeah, not a typical pick up for me but it was one of those pieces that I IMMEDIATELY loved when I saw it, for many of those reasons you note. Thanks!
