Description

Closing out the recent string o’ Thundercats posts with this beaut from Jim Cheung and Dexter Vines!

From a Wizard feature I’ll never forget. Issue #111 had some of “today’s new hot artists” provide their takes on popular ‘80s properties, re-envisioning them in the year 2000. Say those last 3 words like Conan and Andy :)

Little did we realize this article was part of an uber resurgence (and may have been what started it, for the comics anyway, for all I know) in said properties resulting in lotsa new comics, movies, games, etc., featuring these characters us kids of the ‘80s grew up on! The other pin ups in the issue included Transformers by Pat Lee and Alvin Lee (that one blew me away when I first saw it), G.I. Joe by J. Scott Campbell and Jason Gorder, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Joe Madureira and Tim Townsend, and Masters of the Universe by Ed McGuinness and Jason Martin. The latter team would actually be the one to launch the new Thundercats comic series, the first since the Marvel/Star one of the ‘80s, under the Wildstorm imprint less than 2 years later! I actually own the cover to Wizard #131 (well, one of them, as there were 3 covers to that issue) previewing it: https://www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1326227

On to the art! Lotsa characters featured, with Lion-O front and center. Suh-weet seeing Cheung’s more modern/updated take, from the long pants to the shiny claw shield – but still so clearly Lion-O. Also got Snarf, Slithe, Jackalman, Panthro, and Mumm-Ra. LOVE the spinning nunchaku, and that huge head shot of the show’s bid bad sealed the buy for me. So nicely detailed, in large part due to Vines’s sublime inks, on Mumm-Ra as well as throughout the whole image. Cheung and Vines do make a dynamic duo. Overall the image has a strong “take me back” feel while also felling fresh. And so weird to think this was done back in 2000, and that’s where I first saw it and read the article – time flies! Also kinda cool how Cheung did it on a CrossGen board :)

Thanks, Dexter, for the piece and thanks, all, for looking!

Was just thinking how nice the lines look on this, and then I noticed that Dexter was the inker.  Makes perfect sense now.  Great piece!  While the animated versions are obviously more notalgic, I do like seeing these characters done in a non-animated style.

Razor-sharp pinup pays homage to the lore while updating the look to modern splendor.  Stellar eye, K, we can both dance over this one!

Ending your Thundercats run strong with this piece! Great stuff by Cheung - didn't read Wizard much past the first 30 issues or so, but so much great art from that book.

I totally remember this issue! That Joe Mad TMNT blew my mind and I remember thinking this piece was so crazy it just might work. It really doesn't get any better for a 80's convergence with modern comic art. Congrats on the pickup, it's a really fun one!

Yes!  I was really like "WOW!!" when first seeing these, as I didn't remember seeing those properties of my younger years really taken to today (or today in 2000, lol) like that before!  The TMNT was nuts, they all were.  If I had to pick one that floored me most, probably would be the Transformers one by Alvin Lee.  In any case, happy to have the OA to one of 'em here :)  Thanks, Frank, and all, for the comments!

Now I want to see Jim Cheung on a Thundercats book. I remember this piece from Wizard but I forgot how cool it was and didn't realize that Jim was the one who drew it. Absolutely awesome pin up.

Yeah, man, would've been cool but we did end up getting a McGuinness book out of it, so I'll take it :)  And yeah, I don't think I recognized the name Jim Cheung at the time as I was almost exclusively a Marvel reader.  We do know it now, don't we?!  :)  Thanks, Ken!

It's truly amazing how Jim Cheung can include so many characters, plus a quite busy background, without turning the piece into a confusing mish-mash.  Every character is delineated so nicely, each one 'popping' in their own unique way.  And having Lion-O front and center is really terrific. The Cheung/Vines artistic team truly rocks.  Congrats on this fantastic addition!!

Great point on the composition, Paul, with each character standing alone but all combining to make a killer image.  Gotta love that in our OA - packing LOTS in without it feeling packed :)  Thanks, man!

I thought this was a cover the first time I saw it. You know I'm a big fan of Jim's work and super cool to see Dexter Vines' inks on this one. Congrats my friend.

Oh yeah, I KNOW you dig some Jimmy OA :)  And you were a big fan of his pretty early on, too.   Glad you dig this one from early on in his career!  And the inks by Dexter are great, too - not sure if they had worked much together to this point but we know they'd collaborate a lot for a number of years after.  Thanks, man!

Fabulous Thundercats pin-up By Jim Cheung! IMO Cheung not only captures the spirit of Thundercats, he also successfully manages to update them! Dexter Vines' spot blacks and fine linework gives the art a fresh, modern look!

Whoo!  NOTHING beats an artist who is totally fired up about the piece they're working on, and this is Exhibit A right here.  There is no way the joy and energy cascading off of this thing is by accident!  A FANTASTIC composition by Mr. Cheung, realized to perfection by Mr. Vines.  I really love the non-animated (yet distinctly manga) look here, serving to update the T-Cats and prime the franchise for relaunch for a new generation (with a big, smoochy kiss for long-time fans).  Absolutely spectacular piece, K, from an amazing art team!  Terrific pick up - congrats!

Yeah, Tim, I hear you.  I remember the first episode intro, the narration, referred to him as the "ageless devil priest".  That combined with his look...yeah...definitely a BAAAAD guy, lol.  A worthy adversary for 'Cats!  Thanks for the add, man!

I've never this this image and Cheung is a Rockin' Hot Young Gun whose worked I wouldn't see until 2005's Young Avengers. I need this issue of Wizard! Has there been a run on it on eBay yet? Your Thundcats collection is looking amazing!

I had a nice exchange with Cheung at con, was great to tell him his art was some of my first pieces.  He's done a wonderful job on this one as well, great stylings with each character, unique to his talents but still featuring the right qualities to figure each one out.

Yay, CrossGen! If onlythey had looked to license properties for their titles, they would've done a great job with Thundercats. I say that never having read a word of Thundercats or watched a second ofthe cartoon, but CrossGen was so ahead of its time in terms of production values back then that I know it would've been amazing. Anyway, a beautiful looking piece as only Cheung could produce. I love seeing original art to Wizard covers and we rarely see Wizard interior art, so all the more reason to enjoy this wonderful piece. Congrats, man!
