DescriptionA fantastic cover from one of my favorite Superman stories from the early '90s.A full-body and very determined Superman surrounded by flames with a fiery image of the maniacal Blaze to the right and Black Racer zooming (skiing) in from the left. When I won this wonderful piece of art in the 2018 ComicLink auction, on one hand I was totally thrilled, but on the other hand, the thought of posting it right away on CAF made me feel a bit embarrassed because of what I had paid for it. But then again, you have to pay strong for the best stuff, right? And as it often happens in this hobby, as the years went on, the price I paid seemed more and more mild. And now four years later, it seems that I got a REALLY GOOD DEAL! Haha! Thank goodness that time is our biggest ally in this hobby. Anyway, l love this cover image, and the comic itself brings back find memories of reading Marvel and DC books during this time period. Social/Sharing |

I like both of these guys as pencillers, but I'm not sure if I've ever seen them together. Great cover buddy!

Wasn't "Soul Search" the talent show in the 80's with Ed McMahon? Also, still hate you ;)
Fine, It's a great cover. Very happy for...you! Grrr...

Great cover and you are right...if you don't pay strong for the best images you probably don't have any!

Well, thats not quite true. People who bought at, what were for the time, bargain basement prices in the 80s and 90s paid pretty low for fantastic artwork. Some great artwork by fantastic artists was available at not much more than birthday present or Christmas money.

Oh man, I wish I was buying art at that time, cuz you're right, it was a different era. But since I began collecting in 2011, it seems that I have had to (for the most part) overpay for everything and then wait for the market (hopefully) catch up. Not to say there aren't still bargains to be found, but I certainly don't find many of those. But that's okay. It's the thrill of he hunt! :)

You can also do the first appearance thing. I certainly cannot ever.remember seeing Superman roll up the sleeves of his super costume. I can see aome of an overwordy, Mike Burkey style ad now. 'Check out this awesome cover of The Worlds Greatest Hero and first appearance of the memorable, rolled up, ready for action, super suit.'

A fantastic Gammill cover, Paul. It DID seem quite expensive back then, didn't it? But you're absolutely right. I've been counselling people for so many years to not be afraid to overpay for art IF they really love it. Because as you know, the market will ALWAYS catch up to the price you paid, quicker than you think! Great stuff, man, I love Superman art from this era!

The time is coming, to do some soul searchin'
Gamill Breeding, no more blazes burning
The time is friendly for you and me
To bid a lot inspired, no matter what we see
Let's do some soul searchin', just you and me
Our buys are changin', this old world keeps turning
And I sit here wondering prices, what we're really learning
I know you're just a cover, I'm just a fan
Let's be true to the Super, bid the best we can
Let's do some sleeve pullin' -soul searchin'
Some soul searchin-soul searchin'
Let's do some soul searchin, just bid and see

What a memorable cover! Such a strong and determined Superman too. Time to get down to business. 💪
You're right Paul... the passage of time certainly makes past expenses seem like a REALLY GOOD DEAL! After all, this issue was only 75¢!!!

This was my first or second Superman comic and this cover made me a lifetime fan of both Gammill and Breeding! Really wish I could give it a try, but I couldn't afford to put a bid even back then... This is a great Superman cover, congratulations Paul for adding yet another amazing cover to your museum worthy collection !

I always knew when "Still Only" was added before the price tag that it was only a matter of months before the price was going up. "Still Only" translated to me as "enjoy it while you can." That being said, this was my favorite period for the Superman books, and this was a powerful story given what happens to Perry White's son. Whatever you paid for this cover, it was worth it.

Never be embarrassed, Paul. You have an incredible eye, and if you want the best, you pay up. And this is the best. I remember this sweet cover very well. As you'll see in a week, I am a big fan of those hellish pages, too. A heavenly hellish cover. Big congrats!

A special thanks to you, and everyone else who has made me feel better about overpaying for this one. We all know the story --- you're in the thick of the auction, the seconds are ticking down to the end, you put up what you think is an outrageous max bid that noone else will even come CLOSE to ... and then you win it for that bid. Aaaand then you wake up the next morning with a doozie of an auction hangover, hahaha! But yeah, I knew I had bought myself a heavenly hellish cover, so I knew it wouldn't take too too long before I felt a lot better about the price tag. And maybe I wrote my description to let other collectors (especially newbies) know that we all get that embarrassed feeling sometimes, but it'll all be okay in the long run. Thank you also for saying I have an incredible eye. High praise indeed from a collector I respect greatly --- you!. I look forward to you hellish page postings!

You will be telling your great-great grandkids how little you paid for this and they won't believe you.

Aint that the truth! Problem is, I'm 56 with no kids yet. By the time I have great-great grandkinds, my consciousness will have been uploaded to a cyborg body. And maybe by that time, I will have caught up on all my comic book reading.

Congrats! This is a very nostalgic image and the best pieces always seem expensive at the time.

You know you in trouble when Kal-El is rolling up his sleeves! Don't see that too often :) Lots to love about this cover, corner to corner, from Supes to the background to the lettering! Congrats, man!
