Description

I thought I'd stay in the Chicago area for tonight's art post. Author Chester S. Geier and artist Malcolm Smith both lived in Chicago and were two of the mainstays for Chicago-based pulp publisher Ziff-Davis. Here they join forces, as Smith drew the double-page spread for Geier's story, "Weep No More, My Robot," for the June 1945 issue of Amazing Stories. Smith was a prolific artist for the Ziff-Davis chain during the 1940's -- sometimes signing his art with his middle name Hadden -- and eventually became art director for the chain. In the 1950's, Smith continued to do genre work for mags published by Ziff-Davis alumni -- Ray Palmer's Other Worlds and Fate, and William Hamling's Imagination and Imaginative Tales. After his career illustrating for the SF mags was over, Smith became a staff artist for NASA, working at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
