DescriptionIt's been almost a year since my last Gerhard project so I thought it was about time I got Gerhard to add to his portfolio of artists he's worked with. As I always think about commissions, I like to match up an artist who is one the definitive artist for a character with Gerhard. As I thought of Iron Man, one man came to mind - Bob Layton! It just so happened that Bob was on the convention circuit this year. I first started talking with him about doing this pairing in LA and two weeks later he was in his home state of Indiana where Gerhard and I were also hanging out for the weekend. I searched through some pre-drawn pin-ups that Bob had done and this one stood out as a great candidate for Gerhard. When I first saw this, I thought the layout might lend itself to some type of stain glass effect and I envisioned this one in color. The potential issue that Gerhard saw was that Bob had used white out on certain parts (Bob claimed that's just how he inks Iron Man). Bob had already drawn in a simple design for a background. When I asked Bob what it was supposed to be, he indicated that it was supposed to be some type of machine that blew up. That gave Gerhard a good starting point on which to expand. My guidance to Gerhard - "just make Bob jealous of all the detail you can draw." Gerhard first sent me a rough of what the exploding machinery would look like. After approving that design, he fleshed out the B&W inks. Although many of Gerhard's drawings are just as impressive in B&W, I still had that initial feeling that this one needed color. And, as I looked at the composition, it reminded me a bit of the Machine Man Limited Series by Herb Trimpe & Barry Windsor Smith. Ironically, that told the futuristic story of Machine Man battling Iron Man 2020. Well, that future is now only three years away (I love when the present catches up with the future). So, I thought it would be fitting to use the color palette from that story as inspiration for this piece. So, here I present "Iron Man 2017"! Did the color help bring the piece to life? Well, I think so! Social/Sharing |

Great idea and wow. This piece is amazing. I got a Gerhard batman/gargoyle done a few years back. Have to look at some of my sketches now and see what would work with this idea. Congrats. Amazing work. Colour and b/w superb.

Even better than Dr. Manhattan, although not quite as good as the train barrelling down on The Tick becasue what could ever be better than... The Tick

The TickSorry Andy, there won't be another Tick/Gerhard piece this year. Because of the new TV show, Edlund was only at SDCC on Saturday and I left before that.

Now THAT's Iron Man! I can't believe it's been, what, 20 or 25 years since Iron Man actually looked like Iron Man? Like a guy who actually puts on a high tech suit rather than looking like one of an endless variety of high tech robots. If Marvel Studios was happy with the results of the 3 Iron Man movies so far, can you imagine how much cooler and more popular they would be if they actually rebooted the franchise and introduced him in THIS classic costume?! Oh, congrats on the great looking piece, Chuck!
