Many thanks to Rob Stolzer for this stunning cover. I can do no better than to reproduce Rob's excellent description, as follows:

This rare Francisco V. Coching cover is from Silahis magazine, dated 14 September 1946. Silahis was a Tagalog magazine published weekly in Manila, Philippines. The magazine contained news and literary articles written in the Filipino language. Silahis was also the first publication to feature a regular cartoon series by Coching. Bing Bigotilyo was first drawn by Coching at the tender age of 15, in 1934. The cartoon featured a bungling playboy, and was drawn in a fairly cartoony style.

Any Coching covers are quite scarce to begin with, but what makes this one special is that the figures depicted are Coching himself, along with his wife Filomena. The story behind this cover can be found at a previous owner�s blog. This is one of only a few cover self-portraits that Coching drew over the course of his career.

The drawing in this piece starts to approach Coching's most mature work. The brush work is quite lush, and is reminiscent of Alex Raymond's work. And while the composition of the figures is fairly centered, Coching uses the winding orchids to add movement and contrast to the black background. Lovely, lush work.
