DescriptionIt's "DOUBLE Significant Spidey Monday!"Tonight I am posting TWO sequential pages from Amazing Spider-Man #532 (end splash) and #533 (title splash). Both are from the 2006 Civil War saga that pitted hero against hero. Peter Parker began the war on the side of Superhero Registration, led by Tony Stark. Later on, he switched sides to the Resistance, but before doing so, in a HUGELY significant Marvel Moment, during a press conference held by Tony Stark, Peter prepared to unmask to the WORLD! Garney is a fantastic artist and this is an equally fantastic splash page. Reinhold was a really suitable inker on him, too. I never read it, but I assume this has been retconned by now and his identity is a secret again?

Yup, thanks to a deal Peter made with Mephisto at the end of "One More Day," his secret identity is restored (though his marriage to MJ is erased). Aunt May is alive and well, as is a mysteriously resurrected Harry Osborn, a new goblin villain named Menace and a new superhero named Jackpot appear on the scene, and it is time for a "Brand New Day!" Woo hoooo!!

Ruben, this comic is like from almost 20 years ago! How have you not caught up on ANY Spidey since then haha

It's not that I haven't "caught up". It's that I remember purposely not wanting to read the story simply because I hated the unmasking idea. Now that Paul mentions it, I DO remember that it was retconned in that other storyline with Mephisto, yet another story I purposely avoided because I hated the idea of retconning the Peter/MJ marriage. But that's one of the great things about original art, you can still ove it and collect it even if you never read the stories those pages come from!

To be fair, I remember fuming with rage when this and the Civil War issue happened haha! I can't not read Spider-Man, no matter how bad the story. And I would say you're correct about collecting art from stuff you've never read...but this is what lots of Spidey-MCU stuff is based off, it was the biggest thing happening in Marvel at the time, and really still holds some resoance today. I can't imagine not reading it!

DaCollector speaketh the truth, sayeth I. Forgive me, slipped into cod shakesperian Thor talk for a moment. Comics do rot your mind. This is not even a Thor page though it is a 'Thor' point for me.

I do enjoy how you and Ruben speak your mind. I don't agree with all of it (Venom and Carnage Z listers?? Have at thee! Now Paul, don't get 'thor'), but that is neither here nor there. The art and story choices in comic books inspire both positive and negative reactions, and the resulting spirited discourse is a big part of it too.

You do know I loved this story. Just not the day after. Worst hangover ever.

Highly publicized issues and led directly went into the crossover event Civil War issue! McNiven's art on the reveal made it look too slick compared to this Garney art which has the weight of the world on Peter Parker's shoulders.

This was huge at the time, and I thought the immediate issues following this across the Spidey books were very well done. But then came "One More Day" . . .

Yeah, as was the case for many ambitious storylines that Marvel has explored over the years, they had their cake, they ate it too, and then they put it back in Pandora's box.

Which used to be called a what if? story. They cheated, or civil war, and all the tie ins, was the longest what if story ever. Amazing how I can still be angry about this still. Only read one short run of Spidey since and I bought everything he was in before the one more day travesty. Even the god awful clone saga and the horrific overuse of z listers, Carnage and Venom.

"Don't do it, Pete, don't do it!" :) The moment is at hand. Really does feel like you're watching it on a TV screen! Congrats on this and the other, Paul - signficant Spidey adds, no doubt!

Great setup page - love the scene here, reminiscent of the MCU Iron Man scene where he tells the world he is Iron Man. Great page!!

Doesn't get any more dramatic for an end splash. Solid artwork by Garney too.
