I usually don't post images of non-commercial art to my gallery (it's not comic art, after all), but I was feeling nostalgic today, and decided to add a photo of the first piece of art I can ever remember buying. It's an early 20th century portrait study executed by French artist Charles Hoffbauer, and done in the Orientalist style of the period. This was early in Hoffbauer's career, probably while he was studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and an associate of Henri Matisse. He later emigrated to the U.S. where he became well known for winter streetscapes of Manhatten, and large mural projects. I don't add much to my fine art collection anymore, since it's not easy to collect anything on the cheap these days, unlike forty years ago when I acquired this little gem. But it still makes me smile, and marvel at the skill of someone who could create such beauty almost seemingly without any effort at all.
