Just to add to the known history of this piece, I purchased it off Ebay about 20 years ago from the son of the original owner. He told me that his father worked in production for Chesler, and had gotten it directly from Chesler himself as a gift when operations ceased and he was laid off. Jon Berk and I had been friends for some time and when he heard that I had aquired the cover, he suggested a deal and that's how it came to be in his collection.
Man, what a brilliant example. The energy just flows through the piece, it's so dynamic. Congrats!
Very nice page- congrats! I wrote a little about Caesar's career some years ago, in the CFA-APA. The most interesting part was that he was sincerely pro-fascist, and volunteered to be an interpreter and war artist for Field Marshal Erwin Rommel during the campaign in North Africa. Some of his best work was the sketches he drew from that period. They were later collected and published in 1998 by John LUcas, in his book 'Rommel's Year of Victory: The Wartime Illustrations of the Afrika Corps by Kurt Caesar.' Caesar was captured in 1943 and repatriated to Italy.
Beautiful adventure cover. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the main character looks a lot like Kurt Schaffenberger back in the day.
A really nice piece, well executed with a definite Golden Age feel to it. You know, I've been looking for thirty years for a single Novick drawing of the Shield, and I've never seen one. But this is a worthy homage- it has the same type of vibe as Novick's version.
