DescriptionYesterday I posted a John Coughlin pulp cover that arrived at our house yesterday. It was one of two pulp covers in the package; here’s the second one. This one is by George Wert, and was used as the cover to Western Story Magazine, August 28, 1926. Wert’s career as a pulp artist was a long one, running from 1924 to 1950. While he’s probably primarily remembered for his great pen and ink interiors, particularly for the western pulps and the pulps in the Fiction House line, he also painted several pulp covers. He also appears to have worked for Fiction House’s comic line in the 1940’s. I’ve always liked his style.Incidentally, this particular painting reveals that our friend, George Hagenauer, is perhaps secretly an immortal. I’m not sure how else to explain how he was driving a stagecoach on the cover of a magazine from 1926, looking the same as he does today. Social/Sharing |
