Description

With the holiday season approaching, I thought I'd post a Christmas related pulp illo -- sort of. These two illustrations are by Hugh Rankin, who did a number of illos for Weird Tales in the 1920's and 1930's, and both of these appeared in the December 1930 issue of that pulp. The complete one is for an installment of Greye La Spina's "The Portal to Power". The other piece is on the reverse side of the board, and demonstrating in how little regard this art was held for many years, someone has cut the board down, slicing the second illo in half. That's the one that has a Christmas theme, as it's for "The Crime on Christmas Night" by Gaston Leroux (best known as the author of "The Phantom of the Opera"). Presumably the missing half is lost forever. Sigh... That IS a crime, whether on Christmas or not!
