DescriptionClosing out the year MIGHTILY with this early ‘90s beaut…a Thor cover by long running artist of the time, Ron Frenz! And inks by another classic Marvel creator in Al Milgrom!I didn’t collect Thor continually as a kid but had a lot of issues here and there from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s and most of those books were by Frenz, who drew the title for 5.5 years and wrote it for almost as long. I associate Frenz mostly with Spider-Man but Thor’s not far behind and to have such a great cover from the run is verily awesome! A dynamic image here introducing the Thor Corps, with the 3 inaugural members coming right at the reader! Got the Eric Masterson and Dargo Ktor Thors and the worthy alien Beta Ray Bill. Hard to beat the original Thor but the Eric Masterson persona, who would later become Thunderstrike, was a nice change up at the time. Plus it was a nice design…saw it as kind of a hybrid between the original costume and the Simonson armor version, which I love. I distinctly remember issue 384, the 2nd of Frenz’s run, as it introduced Dargo – a fun one off story that they decided to expand on later. And who doesn’t like Beta Ray Bill?! I think this is the first of only 2 covers from the Frenz run featuring Bill. And doesn’t he just have one of the best names in comics?! Here’s to seeing him in the MCU soon! Another thing that really drew me to this piece was that all 3 Thor title lettering types up to that point were shown. The original is up top where the “The Thor War!” reads, the second, which I most associate with Thor is in the lower right, and the third and newest was used for the main title. All 3 types surrounding the 3 characters against a blank/white background just makes for an effective cover image - really makes it pop. It’s funny, if you look on the bottom of the board, either Frenz or Milgrom kind of nonchalantly writes “how about an all white background” – I guess the decision was as simple as that! In any case, great job, gentlemen! Not bad for my first piece from the Mighty Thor! Hope y’all like and happy new year! Best wishes on the collecting front in the new one! Social/Sharing |

1991 is such a nostalgic year in comics for me. Being that this great cover is from “early Dec,” it’s the perfect cover to cap off that year and the end of the copper age. I’m glad it’s going to such an enthusiastic collector.

Yup 1991 closed out the Cooper age and rung in a crazy new era in comics resulting in some of the highest highs and lowest lows! I like to focus on the highs! Didn’t even think about the “early Dec” connection - nice call out and thanks for the comment, John!

Really awesome and I agree with your reasons for what drew you to this one (personally that logo on bottom was my favorite) but the reason I really liked this one was a rare Beta Ray Bill Cover appearance (I think this was his only appearance in Frenz era). Very cool buddy! Bravo!

Agree - the lower right lettering is the best IMO, too, and what I think when I think “Thor”! And having Beta Ray Bill featured was definitely a huge part of me pursuing this. Appreciate the comment, man - you’ve got some of the best Frenz Thor pieces out there!

Oh man, I am jealous of you on this one! I remember buying this issue many years ago and being excited to see three Thors teaming-up. I had only recently finished collecting all of Walt Simonson's run, so of course I knew and loved Beta Ray Bill. But Dargo was new to me, and so I had to go find the issue that introduced him shortly afterwards. Congrats!

Thanks, Travis! It is cool that there are different eras of Thor represented in this one image! Appreciate the comment!

And...isn’t that all that really matters, John? ;) And how about “I’m thunderstruck!” :) Thanks for the comment, man!

Beta Ray Bill covers are hard to find by any artist. Frenz did a great job and this cover is a beauty. Congratulations on another fine addition to your collection buddy. Cheers! N.

Wow, you do have an impressive cover collection, but this one really gets me amazed. Frenz's work on Thor is one of my Marvel sweet spots! :)

Thanks for the comment on my cover collection, Alex - was a lot of work, but more FUN, putting it together! Glad you dig this piece - I think ASM first when I think Frenz but The Mighty Thor is a very close second, with good reason!

Thanks, man! It's funny, speaking of the comic shop, I was at my LCS a few weeks and saw that they released a new collected trade - Thor Epic Collection: The Thor War - and used this cover for it! Had no idea so that was a cool surprise. Was just released this last December apparently. Included an image here in the posting!

Oh fantastic! I love when they repurpose a great cover image like this for a new collected edition. Congrats!
