DescriptionContinuing my Spidey villain posts here with the origin of Morbius, the Living Vampire, as told by modern master Claudio Castellini! I’ve been looking for a Castellini piece and this one definitely hit the mark. Thanks, fellow CAFer Luca Reinero, for parting with it! Just a killer spread here with 10 different individual panel images that, to me, really sum up the character.Morbius is lamenting his misfortune (like he tends to do from time to time!) in the three images on the left. I think Castellini’s style, with the long, lean musculature, works well for Morbius. I love how the cape kind of looks like a moving, void-ish shroud – a neat effect. And that head shot…so much detail and expressiveness, with the lighting and shading accentuated nicely by inker Ralph Cabrera. Then, the meat of the spread that made me have to pick it up – Morbius’s origin retold through Castellini’s rendition of 6 images from Amazing Spider-Man 101 and 102, two of my absolute favorite comics! The knockout punch of a six-armed Spidey at the top right is from a splash page near the end of 101 while the other images are from his origin story in 102. Awesome stuff. I figure my chances of getting any art from those books are slim to none, so this is the next best thing! Lastly, a nice shot of Morbius snapping out of it, ready to prowl the night again! I really like the detail on his clawed right hand. I’ll be curious to see Jared Leto’s take on the Living Vampire’s origin in the upcoming film. I’d venture to say they shouldn’t veer to far from the source material – it’s good stuff :) Thanks for looking, and if anyone out there sees or has any other art from this book to sell, let ME know! Just love that little cover scene in the corner. That alone is worth the cost of admission.

This is gorgeous. I've always loved the montage-style layout and Castellini pulls it off to perfection.

I'm not sure what I look forward to more, the fantastic pieces you post or the wonderful descriptions you write. In this case, they both tie for the gold medal. The whole world of Morbius is artistically encapsulated in this DPS -- great find!

Totally agree, Alex! Claudio only drew one issue from a Spidey title, this one, and there were some awesome images of him throughout - I'm glad to have picked this one up! But wouldn't mind more... ;) Thanks for the comment!
