DescriptionOooh, happy to have picked this up and now be posting as part of my year end Avengers adds. Sure I don’t consider the Hulk a “core” member of the team, but he was one of the OGs, so there you go!A killer DPS here of the Jade Giant from issue #1 of the Heroes Return launch! I really dug these characters’ return to the Marvel Universe proper after Heroes Reborn. For me, started with Cap and Iron Man, then the Hulk. Writer John Byrne and penciller Ron Garney crafted a fun original story and this DPS is one of my favorite images. I think this piece, besides looking great, really exhibits the essence of the character, which I love in original art. First, the Hulk is huge, so you gotta go with a DPS, right?! Love how big he is and how much of the 2 boards his massive arms take up...you do NOT want to be on the other side of that swing :) Second - Dan Green’s inks, I feel, really add some weight, enhancing the magnitude of the image and scene. Third, that top panel sets the scene of the Hulk as literally being a human (or inhuman?) tornado, with nothing being able to withstand his rampage. And those beady eyes...scarily good stuff! You definitely wouldn’t like this guy when he’s angry ;) Lastly, when I think Ron Garney, I think “Wolverine” and “Hulk” so now I’ve got a piece by him of each character (check out my Wolvie cover when you get a chance)! Enjoy, and stay tuned for my remaining Avengers posts of 2019! Social/Sharing |

An absolutely fabulous DPS! The Garney run this is from was artisitically spectacular, with the Hulk always looking enormous and dynamic. This is a perfect example of that.

You know that term "hitting the nail on the head"? Yep, I'd say that applies here - thanks for the comments, Ruben!

Great double splash !
Garney’s Hulk was so powerful. I don’t know if it was conscious or not on his part (probably was) but I see a strong Sal Buscema influence here (the violent rage and tilted pose while punching?).
Ps: Byrne wrote that title, not Waid ;)

Thanks, man! What's interesting is that I have heard a couple artists say how they, at times, are influenced by how Sal B. draws punches - he's just one of the best at doing that booming sweeping shot, particularly the backhand! So I wouldn't be surprised if there may be a hint here. And thanks for the call-out on the writer - it's fixed! I know it was Byrne but in writing the description I was thinking Heroes Return, just posted a Kubert Cap...it happens, right?! :)

Smashing! And your analysis is spot-on, my friend... What a great spread! As you say, the rage, power, and 'force-of-nature' aspect that the Hulk personifies is in vivid and explicit display here. Lovely!

(and it musy be jaw-droppingly, terrifyingly awesome to see in person, or hold in one's hands! Congratulations again!)

Thanks for the great comments as always, Jason! You're right - the piece is really a sight in person. The Hulk is laid out BIG and BOLD and that definitely lends to the granduer, and gravity I guess, of the image!

Oh man, now THAT is a savage (and very scary) Hulk. There is nothing like a DPS to capture the raw might and fury of the Hulk as he does his berserker rampaging. Ron Garney kills it here, and Dan Green's inks are superb.

Excellent piece by an artist that I feel is somewhat underrated, or at least often forgetten when speaking of the greatest contemporary artists. Well chosen!

Good point, Steven! I also like how he's varied his style/technique on different projects, like his more recent Daredevil stuff. As you say, though, the consistent quality is always there. Thanks for the comment!

Yeah, Riz, totally agree and a big part of why it's in my collection! Just so indicative of the RAGE inherent to the character! Thanks, man, as well as all with comments this year!

Ron's work on this series is amazing. This spreads is one of my favorites in the series. So much power. Ron was able to create an extremely angry Hulk. That facial expression is scary. Congratulations on an having this in your amazing collection!
