Description1st of 2 Spidey posts today, and my second post in a row by Mr. Spectacular Spider-Man (SS) himself, Sal Buscema (SB)! I’m a big fan of the under-utilized character Puma, and I loved the 2 issue arc this page is from, so I jumped at it straight away as soon as I saw it posted on Burkey’s site! After the lead up in SS #171, #172 sees Spidey and Puma in a one-on-one duel to the death, with some exquisitely paced action-packed storytelling by SB. In the page prior to this one Spidey kicks Puma into a cactus before luring him into a cave. I love the flow down as you read and particularly like panels 3 and 4. In the former you got a completely shadowed image of Puma paired perfectly with the dialogue – “you cannot hide long from Puma”. Good stuff. And panel 4’s got Puma in a great crawling cat pose which very deliberately fits the horizontally long panel. And that final head shot is a nice bonus! When I think “SS” I think “SB” and vice versa, and the issues featuring Puma are a big part of that, so definitely glad to have picked this up! That said, if anyone’s got the lead on any other pages from this issue, let ME know! Social/Sharing |

Pushed him into a cactus? That's cold Spider-man. Cold.

You know, in spite of the fact that he rankss low on the overall Marvel totem pole, this was one of the rare newly created characters that I really enjoyed whenever he appeared. From his intro in ASM, to the appearances in PPSM, they were always fun reads. This is a really terrific page with great Puma content, but also Sal's peak era!

Thanks, Ruben, and all for the comments! Yeah, this was definitely peak era Sal for me, as his Spectacular run was my first real exposure to his stuff. And he is one of the creators I associate with Puma (the other Frenz - ASM 257 an all time favorite comic) so I'm glad to have nabbed a nice example...though always on the lookout for more :)

Ha! I really hesitated to buy this one. But I thought I owned enough Puma quality pages by Sal (that and to be frank, the first panel with Puma seemingly hurting from his cactus suppository did not "sit" well with me).

Congrats, K Gearon, this is a really nice page from a great period for Sal Buscema. I think it's safe to say that this is one of those pages that won't come back to bite you in the ass, eh?
