Description

Another big Black Panther get here compliments of Mr. Jim Lee! Last week I posted an ‘80s Gene Colan BP page, noting I had moved from 5 left to 3 on the “official” BP checklist – the Colan was one and this one from ‘90s Lee was the other! And picked up both from fellow BP uber fan and collector, Don D! THANKS, man – they’s in a good home! At minimum wanted a Lee page with BP from this run. But this particular one was also one of my top 3, so yes, SCORE!

It’s definitely one of the most BP centric pages from the series. T’Challa meets with Sue and Reed, and says to take on this new threat, he’s got to get hands on as the “warrior avatar of my country -- the Black Panther!” Check out those Kirby influenced Panther statue/totems in panels 3 and 4 :) And when it comes to comic art, ain’t it hard to top a superhero suit up page?! In panel 5 I dig the red electronic lines behind where the suit is sitting, and in panel 6, love the touch of the glove lines being diagonal across the forearm to show he’s pulling them on. Those subtle touches, man…

And finally the mask donning! And you’ll notice I included Joe Chiodo as colorist, because I just picked up the color guide to this page (see in additional images). My first color guide, and I just happened to perusing a site recently, and there it was! Shortly after picking up the OA, so had to marry these 2 up. Also got the published image posted, which ended up being much darker, but cool to compare the gradients.

Heroes Reborn was….OK. Yeah, lol. I was very happy to see the Marvel heroes come back to the Marvel universe proper in Heroes Return. But I really enjoyed visually seeing Lee and Scott Williams’ take on the FF, Doom, and BP – no doubt. So am definitely happy to have checked off a published Jim Lee page while at the same time checking Lee of the BP list! Oh yes, last thing - at the top left, price says $200 :)

Hope y’all like!

Wow, Jim Lee BP!! Big congrats KG! The panel layout works so well leading up to the image at the bottom. Makes for a great page, and I love the note on the color guide!

Lol, yeah, that note's pretty good, right?!  Reed's like "OK, T'Challa, you're my dude and all, but you're getting a little too familiar with wifey."  :)  Glad you dig the piece, man - as you note, some self contained top to bottom goodness.  Thanks, T, and all, for the comments!

Chocked full of Panthy goodness!  I like that final panel where is his putting the mask on to contrast the rest of the page.

baller! That final panel is killer all by itself. Coupled with the finished page including dialogue and context makes this page come alive. Congratulations on the acquisition.

Now you have a Jim Lee BP that's above and beyond, considering that there probably aren't too many.  Congrats on this massive pickup.  Some dynamic and beautiful panels to go with this extraordinary pickup.

Back in black
I hit the bank
I've been too long, Jim’s glad to be back
Yes, I'm let loose
One I choose
That's kept me prowling about
It’s Reed being three of five
'Cause Sue’s lookin' all fine
Forget the herbs 'cause I never die
I got nine lives
Scott’s lines
Abusin' the vibranium and running wild

'Cause Jim’s back
Yes, Jim’s back
Well, Jim’s back
Yes, he’s back
Well, he’s back, back
Well, he’s Panther black
Yes, he’s back in black

I mean, perfect song for the King o' Wakanda :)  "Well he's Panther black...yes, he's back in black!"  Just tried singing/screaming/screeching (it's a mix of those 3 with Brian Johnson's delivery!) those lines myself.  Thanks, Marcus!

Gadzooks!  What an epic score, K...  When you take a swing at crossing names off your "official" BP checklist, you don't mess around!  And an absolutely titanic Panther-centric page it is, too; T'Challa the man, the gear, and the legend...and all by Jim Lee?!?  Fantastic.  (Four, even!). Hard to decide if I like panel 5 or 6 better... so I'd best be safe and go with the fully masked Panther at the bottom of the page, almost hiding in shadows with the other panels floated over him...  So good.  I actually -really- like the first half of the run of the Jim Lee 'Heroes Reborn' books (FF and Iron Man).  It was the Ultimate line, pre-Ultimate line, and it was really fun to reboot some mythology in a modern way, influenced by all those past stories we loved.  Marvel would hit paydirt with the Ultimate line just a few years after this, but I find this experiment really, REALLY interesting.  Congrats on getting such a killer piece (PLUS the color guide?!?  Are you kidding? lol ), K!  This is the collection in which it belongs!

Panel 5...or 6....or 7....tough choice.  I'll cheat and go with "all" :)  Each a doozie on its own but I think the ol' adage "the whole is greater than the sum of its part" applies!  And yeah, really enjoyed those first 6 issues of Heroes Reborn FF.  Was interesting reading the origin revisited, but for me, was definitely coolest just seeing Lee's takes on the classic characters.  I mentioned the FF, BP, and Doom in the description, but there was also the Surfer, Namor, Galactus, and the Super Skrull!  Even as I write this I can visualize a ton of those images.  Appreciate the comments as always, Jason!

I'll give you $200 for this page right now!  Heck, I'll even double that to $400!  Haha, how prices have changed over the years.  This is an AWESOME Jim Lee Black Panther centric page.  Every panel is just beautiful.  And those last three...As Barney was so fond of saying to Ted in HIMYM---"Suit Up!!"  Major major congrats!!

It's a trip, ain't it?!  "$200".  Ha!  When I hear older collectors say "the good ol' days" I'm thinking "you mean the unreal bestest of the bestest days" lol!  And yeah, man, those last 3 panels.  Ha ha, "Suit Up!!"  Then I'll take the other half of Optimus Prime's saying - "...and roll out!!"  Thanks, Paul!

Sure, Heroes Reborn was absolute shite, but the great thing about collecting original art is that you can still love the art even when you despise the story it was drawn for. Congrats on the big score, dude!

Awesome Jim Lee/Scott Williams FF page! What a cool page with Reed and Sue meeting T'Challa in his own kingdom! There is such a nice flow through the panels leading down to the killer panel of T'Challa pulling down the mask of the Black Panther. Gorgeous in every respect!

Yeah, man, patience and persistence.  Can get rough trudging along at times, no doubt.  But then, I stand up straight, get that confident air, do one of these - fortnite-black-panther.gif (498×278) (tenor.com) - and get back to it ;)

Thanks for the add, Steve - super happy with this one!

Congrats on getting a Jim Lee FF page (with a Black Panther suit-up sequence)!  I feel like Jim and Scott were firing on all cylinders then, and their art for this series was just fantastic (no pun intended).  I'd be really curious about the backstory of the "finger pulling" line on the color guide though :)

Thanks, Kin!  Actually just yesterday I flipped through my FF Heroes Return trade and I'd have to agree - page after page after page there winners, no doubt.  Really looked and felt like Lee and Williams went all out on the issues they did together.  FANTASTIC stuff ;)  And yeah, on the color guide - I wondered if it was just something Joe came up with alone when coloring, or if there was a bigger story there.  I may found out yet :)

Yes, this page is just oozing homages to the Lee/Kirby tradition, but what could be better? This is as pure a BP page you can get and it's Lee/Williams, so, yes, it ticks all the boxes!

Thanks, Al!  That panther in panels 3 and 4 is STRAIGHT out of page 4 of FF #52, and overall it's just really cool to have this suit up scene from that classic book but Lee and Williamsonized!
