DescriptionKevin Maguire was in Europe again last weekend, so I realised I had never posted the commission he drew for me when I met him in Lille in 2010. I remember being quite excited when he was announced at that festival as he has always been an artist whose work I followed very closely. Great stylist and fantastic storyteller whose work on JLI/A everybody remembers as one of those great reads of the 80s.Regarding the choice of character, rather than going for a favorite, I thought I would go with one Kevin was closely associated with. I think that to this day, his version of Power Girl in JLI/JLA remains my preferred iteration of the character. Plus, I find that Kevin draws sexy women that are never vulgar so that played into my choice as well. And let’s be honest, she was…truly gifted by Mother Nature which is never a minus ^^. Last but not least, let’s not forget that common sense dictates that you also factor in that fact that Kevin is amazing at characters acting and, this is a truism at this point in his career, facial expressions. And this is a fun part of the story of commissioning him because as soon as I made his list, Kevin told me he requested the commissioner to state which emotion the character should showcase. Which surprised me at first but which I loved as a sign of a great storyteller looking at that angle in anything he is drawing. So given the obvious sexiness of the character, I asked him to reflect her being annoyed at her colleagues staring at her…impressive chest. The result to me is pitch perfect. She is sexy and yet clearly annoyed (her expression, her body language) in a “c’mon, NOT AGAIN” kind of way. The addition of dialogue was my request upon seeing the completed piece and adds even more fun. One interesting thing to note is that she is realistically built in that Kevin did/does not draw her as a famished teenager with giant boobs but rather a thicker, more sportive, built with believable proportions. He also knows how to draw a woman’s chest which can’t be said for many superstar artists, in a comic industry that more often than not objectivate women, who can’t draw women’s breasts to save their lives, other than going for the silicone enhanced variety (I can provide names privately ;). Now the completion of the piece is also a fun story as well. I was probably second or third in line on Kevin list for the whole weekend. I’m sure many of you know he is not the most rapid artist in the world. So, well in the afternoon of the first of the two days of the show, I went to see where Kevin was on the completion of his list which had not advanced much. So, for the rest of the day till the end of the show on the second day, I would (very) nervously go to him or try to spy from afar to see if he was working on my piece which was (of course) complete at the very last seconds of the show. I’m obviously delighted by the result as it’s the perfect Maguire piece imho. Social/Sharing |

She's a knock out! Knock out knockers! Whoops I mean...her eyes are so pretty! That's an interesting story behind the commission process, gotta say it's unexpected for an artist to request the commissioner to specify an emotion but it seemed to turn out great and I like that you opted for the added dialogue to really bring that annoyed look home. Congrats on the Maguire. I also formally submit my request for the Fred artist boobies Mount Rushmore list as well as the Fred artist bazongas of shame list!

Turned out very very well. I love that Maguire asks which emotion the character should express. That's a sign of his confidence that he can execute whatever the commissioner requests. I suppose it also makes it interesting for himself as the artist.

the caption makes me think of all the times IRL that I have seen girls wearing t-shirts with eyes printed at chest level. Congrats you pervert!

She's Superman's cousin (or whatever), she can handle it. Strong spine runs in the family ;)

A Kevin Maguire piece wouldn't be a Kevin Maguire piece without the perfect facial expression.

I love his "simple" line work. Super sharp commission
