Description

The premise initially felt like a tough sell—at least to me. A British Redcoat who becomes immortal in 1776 and embarks on a series of adventures? I wasn’t sure this concept was for me, even though I’ve always admired Bryan Hitch’s stunning artwork. But given Geoff Johns’ incredible work on Geiger and Junkyard Joe, I decided to take the plunge. So far, I’m happy to report it hasn’t disappointed. This book delivers an engaging blend of adventure, humor, surprises, sharp dialogue, well-developed characters, and absolutely breathtaking art.

Issue 7, in particular, resonated with me on a deeper level. This issue serves as a heartfelt interlude—a kind of narrative palette cleanser between major storylines. It dives into the character of Simon Pure, offering a moment to slow down, reflect, and connect with his emotional core before we dive headfirst into his next series of misadventures. The story exudes heart, striking a perfect balance between introspection and setup for what’s to come. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love serialized comics. There’s something special about the rhythm and anticipation of weekly or monthly issues, where each installment offers a fresh chapter in an ongoing journey.

This issue left such an impression on me that I couldn’t resist picking up a page from it. The emotional weight of the story, paired with Hitch’s exceptional art, makes it a standout. (I’m not entirely sure if this page is drawn by Hitch and Currie together, or just Hitch, The credits list both as inkers) The work here is nothing short of stunning. I’ve included a color version below for you to see why this specific page struck such a chord.

It’s a shame some art collectors have moved away from reading comics. While collecting individual pieces of art is undeniably rewarding, you miss the opportunity to experience the full context—the narrative and emotional depth that elevates these moments from great art to unforgettable storytelling. There’s so much good material out there right now, and this series is a prime example of why comics as a medium continue to thrive.
