DescriptionJohn Byrne is, without question, one of the greatest comic book artists to ever pick up a pencil. His sheer body of work is staggering, and he played a huge role in shaping my early love of comics. I didn’t discover Byrne through X-Men or Fantastic Four, for me, it all started with The Incredible Hulk.I didn’t even realize this page was from the very first Byrne comic I ever owned until after I bought it. That issue’s cover was so memorable: the heaviest-hitting Avengers falling from the sky to ambush the Hulk in the desert, drawn with such precision and impact that I couldn’t look away. Around the same time, I was collecting the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe: Deluxe Edition and kept noticing a pattern, every character that looked especially badass? John Byrne had drawn them. That name stuck. Man of Steel came shortly after, and from then on I was hooked, a lifelong admirer of Byrne’s clean storytelling, draftsmanship, and total command of the page. This particular page doesn’t feature his Hulk (my favorite version sorry, Sal and Herb), but it does showcase his She-Hulk, a character he redefined so thoroughly that his version is still the one I think of first. You can tell Byrne really enjoyed drawing her. And yes, that’s Betty Banner, looking a little wild-eyed and trying out some bold choices in hair and boyfriends. She eventually got her life together, but let’s be honest, General Ross didn’t make it easy. Bonus: the back of the page includes a fun pencil sketch by Byrne himself. The issue credits Keith Williams with inks assist, I’m guessing he handled background inks here, so he gets a shoutout, but the headline stays Byrne’s. Thrilled to have this piece in my collection. What a wonderful page... Byrne's She Hulk is always a winner and I am always impressed in how well his characters emote and I encourage everyone to check out Chuck's additional image of the sketch on the back of the page it's impressive as well! CONGRATS!!!

Origin retold and it's all in a self contained page! Byrne's artwork redefined every character he touched and this She-Hulk appearance is during his later run on the FF so it is to perfection!

Great page origins are always great. The sketch on the back looks like he was working out the side character from Fantastic Four 264. It was published earlier but maybe this sat around until he used it.
