Description

Who saw coming that the subject of this 1992 mini-series would become the successor of the Mantle of the Bat? Back in pre-commercial Internet 1993, collectors and readers scrambled to find back issues of Sword of Azrael, with #1 fetching as high as $25.00USD (Nowadays you can pick it up for about six bucks). If nineties comics get beat up for their Lee-Liefeld influenced house style, then Joe Quesada and Kevin Nowlan's art ducked the punches with artwork unlike the era it came from. In 1993, Joe Quesada was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Penciler and Kevin Nowlan took home the gold (or paper certificate?) for Best Inker for this series.

In Sword of Azrael readers journey alongside Jean-Paul Valley with what role he will take as Azrael. Is he good? Is he bad? On this page, Azrael is forced to make a decision that pits him between his duty of an all-avenging angel and his humanity as Jean-Paul Valley. This page also features the main cast of characters that appeared in the series: Azrael, Bruce Wayne, LeHah, Nomoz, and Alfred.

Happy 25th Anniversary, Azrael!

Azrael created by Denny O'Neil and Joe Quesada. Script by Denny O'Neil.

Sound effect and word balloons are paste-ons. Lettering by Ken Bruzenak.

I remember the scramble for back issues of this miniseries once people realized that Azrael was going to take up the mantle of the bat.  People were also getting excited about Quesada's art, and it's easy to see from pages like this why that was the case.

Still enjoying it after all these years. I think it was the most expensive panel page I ever bought at the time but it's become one of my prized pages. Thank you for parting with it 🙏

Wonderful team, wonderful miniseries. Really, it's hard to imagine topping the work that Joe Quesada and Kevin Nowlan did on Batman: Sword of Azrael. The two of them crafted a series of books that we all still remember today. This is a wonderful example from the miniseries. It didn't look like anything else in the '90s because it wasn't like anything else in the '90s. Congrats on a great pick-up!
