Description

Largely considered the first American costumed superhero, the Phantom is one of those great characters that spans generations. From newspaper strips to comic books to serials to feature films, the Ghost Who Walks stands the test of time. Phantom art isn't easy to come by in the US (I suspect it's been snatched up by European and Australian collectors, who have an even greater interest in the character than we do), so I was glad to find this example by the late, great Don Newton.

Newton's run on the Phantom is legendary and this is one of the best pages I've seen. It never struck me how Frazetta-like this was, but I definitely see a bit of Thun'da in the imagery and the inks. Cheers!

Don Newton's sorry run truly brought the character back to the forefront. His progression as an artist from RBCC to Charlton to DC was incredible.

The Shadow inspired Phantom lower panel is fantastic.
