DescriptionSubmariner is a character whose name I loved to say as a kid. My instinct was to pronounce it submarine-er. Because it had the word submarine in it. When I learned it was pronounced sub-mariner, I was sure everyone else had it wrong! Maybe one day the world will come around. ha ha.Like the Silver Surfer, I found the Submariner to be a truly Shakespearean creation (at least in so far as it was a comic book). The introspection, the family dynamics and the dialogue! If the dialogue on the cover here is any indication of what makes this comic so cool - imagine how the rest of the book went. For his part, Sal Buscema was a true Marvel work horse and while he remained in the shadow of his brother John for many many years is finally starting to get some of the love that he truly deserves. While I would be totally satisfied if I never got another Submariner piece of art in my lifetime - I am interested in adding a John Buscema Subby splash or cover if you should ever have one to sell. IMPERIUS REX!!!!!! the first mutant, the king of atlantis....Subby has always been a favorite of mine. Love his brash personality and walking the line between hero and villian. Congrats on a beautiful Buscema cover and bringing up your m to f ratio

Wow, what a fantastic Sub Mariner cover. Doesn't get much better than this. Excited to see his introduction into the MCU as well. Thanks for sharing!

Big grab, Duke! Congrats on adding a Subby cover to the stable. Also, you're dead wrong about the pronunciation. "Mare-in-urr", no arguments.

Its sub-mar-in-er. There are no mares in the sea, except sea horses.

I had the same instinct until I saw the cartoons. But then my instinct was also that it was pronounced Issss-lend. :)

This is great because not only is he rampaging against the army like the Hulk alway has, but he's also uttering the famous words he often uttered back in his earlier days, about warning the surface worl not to attack him! Love Marie's inks, too!

Would not have pegged this for your collection. A great example! Same issues with Submariner AND Namor. Still unsure if it's Naymore or Nahmer?!

Wonderful cover! Love the detail that went into this. It's not everyday you get to see the pure rage of Namor, and it is captured perfectly with this one. Big Congrats!

Sub-ma-REE-ner, Sub-MA-ri-ner. Po-TAY-to, po-TAH-to. I had the same problem when I was a kid. But really all I cared about was how cool this character was (is). Absolutely stunning cover, and such an iconic image of Namor's contentious (often violent) relationship to the surface world.

I put it to you this paragraph from your own description proves you have a chronic habit. 'While I would be totally satisfied if I never got another Submariner piece of art in my lifetime - I am interested in adding a John Buscema Subby splash or cover if you should ever have one to sell.'
When you go into 'rehab' send me your collection so the mere sight of it does not tempt you into further purchases when they let you out. To put your mind at rest on another matter A submarine is where, non winged, submariners live. A sub mariner is a poor mariner. Not worthy of a first team start, which might explain why every solo Sub -Mariner title swifty sank from view. Lol. Nice art.

This cover is loud! You can hear the shouting, the crumpling of the tank, the crackle of small arms fire creating a background din, fully drowned out by the booming voice of Subby...the whole thing SCREAMS. I love it! Congrats!

Yep, that was me as a kid, Submarine-er was his name. Imposing cover and a perfect time to share it after his visual introduction to the MCU.

There is Severin's inks to consider here but this is Big John level for sure.
Sal is a truly fantastic artist and storyteller who just happened to have a big bro' doing the same job and being a genius at it.

Great cover! Sal captures all the righteous outrage of Namor. The body casually flung from the tank emphasises Subby's disregard for human life. Congrats!

What a great cover. Like you, I also pronounced his name the same way. So, maybe we are right and everyone else is wrong. Subby was one of my favorite Marvel characters and I really love the way Sal draws him. Congrats on an awesome addition to your collection.
