DescriptionI have been a Tarzan fan since I was a little boy and my dad rented the old black and white movies on film with a projector for my 4th or 5th birthday (1970s). Of course, in the 80s,90s there were more Tarzan films to enjoy and even the recent one with Sam Jackson was worth watching IMO.Now back to comics. I have never read any Tarzan comics, but being a huge fan of Buscema, I instantly fell in love with this cover when it came up on Dueling Dealers. I have to add that Janson's marvelous inks really added to it. Sadly I didn't see it live, and by the time Anthony posted it on his site, the price was raised up. Several years earlier, I was outbid on a really cool Buscema Tarzan splash at Clink, so I was kind of bummed out. Back to Anthonys: I just couldn't bring myself to buy it at the new higher price. Then it said sold. My heart sank. Then a while later back for sale (Yippee.. but the price was still high) and then it disappeared off the website for good. At least I didn't have to think about it. Then one day, out of the blue - it showed up at auction. It was time to get off the fence. In the end, I am super happy to have this baby in my collection. If you read this far, let me add that when I first saw this cover, I was reminded of a DPS by Frank Cho from Savage Wolverine that I always admired. see the additional images if you dare! Thanks again for taking the time to look! Social/Sharing |

Tarzan was really miffed when his Atari 2600 controller broke causing him to lose the inaugural Joust tournament.

Nothing says "battle scene" like some flying teeth! Great example, Duke.

Nice read, and good that it ended up in your collection especially after your disappointment of seeing it sold.

I like the Cho piece comparison, but Cho's figures are somewhat stiff in comparison to Buscema's. Nobody does or did figure movement quite like Big John. This is a splendid Tarzan example and after all the psychological pain you went through with it before it ultimately ended up in your collection, it is well deserved, I think! Kudos!

John Buscema does what he does best! The human figure in motion in all its raw glory for all out battle for survival is very compelling. Every weapon, every emotion, and every loin cloth perfectly placed like a Renaissance painting where there's a story being told in each figure! The late 70's was when adventure fantasy was making a big revival of older properties, but now done in a way that hadn't been this exciting.

I remember when Joe Kubert was drawing Tarzan. I always thought it would be difficult to match his ability to present such a captivating image of the Lord of the Jungle. I was wrong. Big John crushed it!

What a way to combine interests in the old Tarzan flicks with this stuff we love in comic OA, and by the great John Buscema! Great action scene composition, with the master of gestural figurework doing his thing! And yes! Totally see the connection with that Cho DPS :) Remember that run fondly. Congrat on the page...it got where it needed to get!

I always prefer Big John inking himself but what an intense cover. You really feel the fury of the brawl. I hope that when it came down to it, you were comfortable with the price paid.

Definitely hurting your f to m ratio on this one.
Thanks for sharing your backstory and glad you ended up with it. Aside from the movies I've never read Tarzan either, but the art is amazing

Killer cover! I remember this appearing for sale and then disappearing and reappearing a few times, as well. I'm glad that you kept tracking it and congratulations on an amazing piece!

It is clear that JB had huge knownlege about anatomy! At the same level that the classic painters!!! IMHO this is what mafe his art almost perfect. I can't think in a better example of it.

A Wolverine and Tarzan team-up comic could actually be pretty cool, imo. Just thought of that since you tire them together. But as for this cover, awesome! Beautiful detailed work by Buscema. Great patient score!
