DescriptionThis cover is from Part Five of a very exciting -- and ultimately quite poignant -- story called "The Mask In The Iron Man," written by Joe Quesada, with covers by Joe Quesada and Tim Townsend. In the first four parts of this story, Tony's already extremely advanced armor becomes fully sentient as the result of a combination of lightning and the Y2K bug. The armor wishes to become one with Tony in order to become the perfect Iron Man. As Tony digests this fantastical turn of events, the armor starts to mess with Tony's personal relationships and also ends up killing Whiplash. Tony realizes that the armor will never fully understand humanity, so he dons another suit of armor to fight it. The sentient armor defeats Tony and transports him to a remote island, which brings us to issue #30 (Chapter 5: "Blood Brothers"). The armor holds Tony hostage for days, letting him starve and dehydrate, not understanding Tony's refusal to love him as he loves Tony. The armor is about to finally kill Tony when it receives an Avengers distress call and flies off. Tony gets himself free and uses training Captain America gave him to gather his wits, trap a small animal for food, and realize it's the man that makes Iron Man, not the armor. Fashioning some crude weapons and traps, Tony ambushes the armor when it returns, and an epic battle ensues with Tony striking some serious blows. Tony then tries to pry the armor's faceplate off, but the armor does it for him, revealing a face it plans to cover with synthetic flesh to replace him. Suddenly, Tony experiences another heart attack. He begs the armor to kill him, but instead it rips out its own heart and fuses it to Tony's, dying. Using its husk, Tony sends out a distress beacon with his watch and buries the armor, marking its grave with a cross declaring it was an Avenger. Social/Sharing |

I've gotten so used to seeing Miki inks on Joe that this really took me by surprise. But it was a nice surprise. Definitely a different touch here. Gives Joe's lines a whole fresh look. Congrats on a great cover!

Hmm, I dunno why I never assumed Y2K would cause issues for Iron Man but it makes sense. Another winning Quesada piece!

I love this cover! All the covers from this story were distinctive and I remember them all fondly from when I was younger. This one really stands out.

So that's where Y2K hit...its an awesome cover! How can you beat Tony fighting his armor? And that was a great storyline. Congrats!

BIG congrats, Paul! This is one of my favorite comic arcs, not just Iron Man, but in comics. A great story with the right mix of action and quieter thought provoking moments, illustrated awesomely by Sean Chen inside and Joe Q. outside! This is definitely one of the best and very indicative of the arc as a whole. Quesada has mentioned he doesn't particularly like drawing Iron Man...too bad for him as he clearly does it SO well :) Stellar get, Paul.

Very nice design and befitting of the Artificial Intelligence theme the story seems to have. The story title being a play on Dumas' classic "The Man in the Iron Mask" also fits nicely, so kudos to Quesada on all of that. Finally, as Eric points out above, it was very surprising to see anyone other than Miki inking Quesada, but he did a bang up job!

What a cover! Not familiar with this story so big thanks for breaking it down. Only thing better than having a Quesada cover is one attached to such a story with such gravitas! Beautiful inside and out. Congrats!
