Description

Saw this one on Heritage and took a stab at it because it just looked so interesting. Apparently unpublished from the estate of Joe Simon, it's a classic, moody Golden Age piece. And wildly historically inaccurate (Mata Hari's only daughter died at the age of 21 and never spied for anybody).

It came on a *very* heavy art board and just looks great. I only wish I knew who drew it.

I've added some panel close-ups so you can see the detail. Also, I colored the art to try and mimic what it might have looked like published.

Later items posted on Heritage lead me to believe that Bill Draut, at the very least, inked this piece, so I am adding him. People who know this era and Draut better than I have concurred, so I feel pretty safe with this attribution.

I also never could come up with an artist attribution. Still the art is strong and (despite questions about historical accuracy) a good short story. I am not sure why it never got used, it certainly was good enough to have been. Perhaps it was one of the pieces left over when the Simon and Kirby studio collapsed.
