DescriptionSo, if you have seen my collection of original art, you know I have a lot of pieces by Paul Smith. A lot. Too many, some of my friends would say. But although I have numerous commissions and sketches by Smitty, I only have one published interior page from this modern master. Here it is.The Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction was supposed to be an intra-company (IDW and DC Comics, in this case) collaboration between Mark Waid and Paul Smith. The first issue was drawn by Paul and then he withdrew for reasons unknown. The remaining three issues were drawn by other artists. It's a great loss, because that first issue is simply gorgeous. To date, this issue is Paul Smith's last published comics story. This was one of my favorite pages from the issue. As you can see, Smitty excels in building drama. The chase is on with the Rocketeer and the Spirit! Thanks to Gerry Turnbull and Joseph Melchior for selling this page and my friend, Jeffrey Dunn, who picked this page up for me at New York Comic-Con last year. Social/Sharing |

Sweet action sequence! You get the meteor streak of Rocketeer through the skies and the spin out of the Spirit's car! It's action and facial expression that highlight what a gifted storyteller Smith has been through his career.

The panels with the Spirit exhibit 2 different styles capturing different ghost artists. A very nice page!
