Item description: 1986, an Ideal Depiction of Wally West, the Future Flash ComicLink Comments: This is George Perez' illustration done on vellum and board of Kid Flash (Wally West) for the original Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe. This 24-issue series was created to celebrate DC's 50th Anniversary and great care was taken to hire the best artists for each character. This piece was in the 12th issue, which was published in 1986. Perez had been drawing Kid Flash for six years at that point in his historic run on New Teen Titans. As one would expect from the master of detail, this piece is a superb depiction of Wally, including references to his origin and his relationship with his mentor, Barry Allen. Wally West is one of the most popular characters in the DC Universe. He was first introduced in 1960's The Flash #110 as an occasional sidekick for the then new Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen. Wally took the name Kid Flash and became a charter member of the Teen Titans starting in the mid-60s. Just after Perez drew this piece for Who's Who, Wally became the new Flash after Barry died in Crisis on Infinite Earths #8. He received his own successful title that ran for over 200 issues. When Barry Allen returned during Final Crisis after being gone for 20 years, Wally at first maintained his role as The Flash. When the New 52 began in 2011, Wally was written out of continuity. Fans were not happy and in 2016, he famously returned in the opening chapter of DC's Rebirth initiative. A version of Wally West/Kid Flash also appears on the hit TV series, The Flash. George Perez is one of the most beloved artists in comic book history. Perez broke into comics at Marvel in the mid-70s and became a sensation at a young age drawing both of Marvel's chief team books of the time, Avengers and Fantastic Four. Perez brought a whole new level of detail to superhero comic books, which made him a sensation with fans. In 1980, he switched to DC where he made history as the co-creator and artist of the New Teen Titans. He would make history again a few years later with DC's Crisis on Infinite Earths, the book that changed the entire DC Universe forever. In the aftermath of Crisis, Perez reinvented Wonder Woman for a new generation of fans, creating the most successful version of the character since the Golden Age. Social/Sharing |
