If you saw the splash page to the reveal of the new Braniac in my CAF, you'll know how much I love this issue. HA had this piece in an auction a while ago, and it's one I really wanted, and was fortunate enough to get it.

Ed Hannigan designed the New Braniac and I'm happy to be the proud owner!

Some history on the story itself:

Special 45th anniversary issue. Cover pencils by Gil Kane, inks by Dick Giordano. "Luthor Unleashed!", script by Cary Bates, pencils by Curt Swan, inks by Murphy Anderson; Barely alive after his latest fight with Superman, Luthor heads to Lexor to recover, where he meets his son for the first time; Meanwhile, back on Earth, one of Luthor's robots takes revenge in his master's stead. Luthor illustration by George Perez. Happy 45th Anniversary, Superman! article by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Congratulations, Superman! illustration by Joe Shuster. "Rebirth!", script by Marv Wolfman, art by Gil Kane; With Superman's unwitting help, Brainiac escapes his prison, experiences the depth and breadth of the universe, and reforms as an entirely new kind of being; Then Brainiac lures Superman to Systus 2, where he robs the hero of his powers, and greets him in his new form for the first time.
