DescriptionI've ALWAYS wanted a page or cover from the series! This ad is just fantastic and happy to be able to have!!!!!!!!The inspiration for Cloak and Dagger came to Bill Mantlo after a visit to Ellis Island. He recounted, "They came in the night, when all was silent and my mind was blank. They came completely conceived as to their powers and attributes, their origin and motivation. They embodied between them all that fear and misery, hunger and longing that had haunted me on Ellis Island."[3] Ed Hannigan, Mantlo's artist collaborator on Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man, recalled that he and Mantlo jointly came up with the characters' visual design: "Bill had a short page or two synopsis of the story that he showed me, and we discussed what the characters would look like. He gave me a lot of leeway, but it was fairly obvious that Cloak would be black and have a big 'animated' black cloak and Dagger would be white with a skintight leotard-type thing. I am not sure, but I think I might have come up with her ballet angle. I put the same kind of amulet/clasp on both costumes and came up with the dagger-shaped cutout on her costume, which was quite daring at the time."[3] Rick Leonardi and Terry Austin combined forces on this 1984 promotional piece touting the start of the first Cloak and Dagger on-going series in 1985. It ran in various Marvel Comics in late 1984. It's a strong depiction of the duo. Cloak and Dagger first appeared in Spectacular Spider-Man #64 and the pair, both teenage runaways with super powers, was an instant hit with readers and collectors. This led to a four issue limited series in 1983 and then a regular bi-monthly series in 1985. The characters have reappeared in Marvel's roster over the past 30 years and continue to attract a devoted collector following. Now they are moving into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own TV series on ABC's Freeform cable network starting in early 2018. Rick Leonardi has been an active artist working for Marvel and DC for over 30 years now. He's perhaps best known for co-designing the black costume Spider-Man with Mike Zeck that eventually transformed into the character of Venom. Terry Austin is the multiple award-winning inker best known for his historic run with John Byrne on X-Men in the late 70s and early 80s. Social/Sharing |

I'd be hard pressed to name a better drawing of this duo. Such a memorable image and ad.

Damn, that's cool. I always loved how Leonardo drew Dagger with a graceful petite body. In a universe of interchangable female characters, she stood out.

I hate you. ;) Seriously, major congrats on a terrific piece. That Leonardi and Austin team were top notch on that series, so they obviously went even more all-out for the piece to promote the series. Excellent pick-up.
