DescriptionThis one is extra special to me. A cursory look thru my CAF and you'll see Tokyo Ghost is one of my most favorite books and Sean Murphy, one of my favorite artists. When Sean was working on Tokyo Ghost he teased progress pics of the top panel and I just fell in love. The form and composition - so great! So much of comics is about capturing moments of tension (clenched fists and jaws, scowling brows), which i think is easier than capturing subject matter in repose. The way Sean grounds the figure, the way he shows his command of how gravity informs Debbie's form. She looks at rest, yet so dynamic! The middle panels do a great job capturing a moment between Debbie and Dent as she nurses him through his detox. The bottom panel is gold! Gorgeous! Glorious! I love the cast shadow of the baby whale and how Sean conveys shafts of light in the water, using wisps of white ink. As well as how the mama whale's form fades into the murk. Bonus - Sean gives us an outside shot of the submersible vehicle! The photo doesn't do the page justice. By the time I was looking to buy my very first OA from this series, this page had already sold. When I found CAF and saw the page in a fellow CAF members gallery I reached out to see if he'd be willing to sell. While he was open to selling, we couldn't agree on a price and he shortly thereafter found another buyer. One night, years later, after feeling particularly sour over missing out on a grail piece, I went back to the original owner and asked if he could contact the buyer and make them an offer on my behalf. The same night the deal was struck and the page was mine...i ended up paying more than I would have, had I just accepted the original sales price, way back when, but that's just part of the hobby. Thanks Rabid Ferret for the assist. Social/Sharing |

Great pickup. Money comes and goes but this art,it is in your clutches forever. Or perhaps until the other two previous owners realize what they lost and come back higher again. And on it goes and on it goes and on it goes...

If you want something drawn with a cool attitude, gotta go SGM. Remender probably expanded what he wrote to get the most out of him in this series.

This really is a great page. It's funny how some pages haunt you and never let you forget them. Congrats on finally getting this grail piece!

I love this the sense of space in this one. Those too top panels. Wow. And then the open space in the last panel. Just a lovely example. Congrats.

Jawdropping page from Sean Murphy's "Tokyo Ghost"! This is an incredible sequence of scenes in which we see Debbie at rest in a submersible vehicle of some sort, then we see Dent detoxing, and then Debbie nursing Dent...And then...POW!... it's revealed they are under the ocean and a massive whale and its baby are drifting past them. We also see the tiny submersible they are riding in and it's a magical moment. Amazing work by the great Sean Murphy. Unbelievably cool.
